Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Greetings from Huntington, W.Va.

Just wanted to check in and see your guys' thoughts on the contest yesterday afternoon, and I came across this topic. I feel like it's based on super-limited interaction and little understanding of Marshall fans in general.

First, I went to Death Valley Sept. 4, 1999 to watch Marshall defeat Clemson. Heck of a game, even though Marshall left a bunch of points on the field (and Clemson missed several FG's of medium-distance). I don't think I had a single bad interaction, but I was just 16 years old and had ridden 9 hours in a car to a muggy Clemson, S.C. so I only have limited memories outside of the game. Truth be told, I don't remember a single interaction of any kind. When I got there, I wound up in a Herd of Marshall fans walking into Death Valley together... and after the game, obviously too. I felt happy because we'd beaten a good team, so I don't remember even seeing a Clemson fan up close after the game. But I left there with nothing but love for the school, and even considered Clemson. It's one of my favorite schools in general, and I loved the area. A friend I knew growing up here, Roman Fry, eventually went to Clemson and was a starting All-ACC OL.

So all that backstory behind, Marshall fans are really, really proud. Most of the supporters who made their way to Cary yesterday afternoon probably know little to nothing about soccer. But that doesn't matter to them because when the Herd plays, they'll go. When Marshall is good, our people travel. You guys who were there in 1999 know that. Our softball team made an NCAA regional in 2013 for the first time and sold out UK's stadium, outnumbering their own fans in a TV game. As such, you get super casual fans who don't know a thing or know little about the game, who simply go to support their team.

As for whiniest, we all have a chip on our shoulder with ACC schools in general due to a few instances of shady officiating in football. ACC officials absolutely stole a football game from Marshall at NC State in 1991. Marshall fans also remember the 125-yard game winning TD drive in Death Valley when linesman Sam Stevenson threw 6 flags on a single possession for penalties no one saw, several he tossed after a pass was completed. So there's ALWAYS going to be a chip on our shoulder with ACC schools, right or not. It's literally not about you or any other school, it's strictly officiating. Even in an NCAA, non-conference affiliated crew. Clemson was called for 6 more fouls than Marshall yesterday, but Marshall had 2 more yellow cards, including one for kicking the ball out of play after an offsides call. Meanwhile Clemson had a guy kick the ball into the Marshall stands well after a foul and there was no yellow card to be found. I'm also fairly certain Clemson was offside on its goal. The picture sequence the Clemson Soccer Twitter account posted of the goal makes it look pretty apparent when you overlay it with the video. Two guys between the last defender and the keeper, with the ball 5 yards upfield being headed in... seemed obvious to me but I don't know the game that well. I'm simply a casual fan who tries to pay close attention.

Regardless, we all have our fans who are morons and seem to think the reason to go to a game is simply try to trash the opponent instead of cheering for your own team. I don't get that at all.

Marshall fans are excited about this team and the program in general. Marshall has a heck of a coach who has changed the culture in the program in a very short period of time.

Nothing but respect for Clemson. I realize you had some guys leave to go pro between Fall and Spring, but I think your top-ranking in the Spring was deserved. I think Marshall is quite a bit better than you guys are giving credit for, as you guys aren't the squad you were before you lost your professional caliber players. But you are still very good, and I understand your frustration.

If you made it this far in this novel, I greatly appreciate it! And wish you guys nothing but the best. Besides, we beat South Carolina in football in 1998 (yes, they won 1 game... but I think we sank them early), and 2-0 over South Carolina in soccer earlier this season, so we can't be all that bad, right?

If you know the name of a referee from a game that was played over 20 years ago...a game that your team won. You don't have a chip on your shoulder, you have a whinny fan base.

Congrats on your win yesterday. I was able to watch the 1st half on line. Knew we'd have our hands full from the start.

The name is easy to remember and the color commentator from the contest called him out more than once since he was the official on the Clemson sideline that night. The name sticks when, after penalties, you literally go 125 yards on a game winning drive against a team you haven't scored a TD against all night. I also have a really good memory. That is a marquee win (not "the" but certainly one of the best) in our program's history. I've watched that broadcast a few times on lazy, stormy days when there was nothing better to do over the years.

You guys were so much better than perceived that year, too. 3 losses to 3 unbeaten teams in regular season, two of them by 3-points, the other on the road. Of course that Clemson team was nothing compared to what you have now as one of the elite 2 programs in CFB with Alabama (I really think you're 2-3 more great years from people saying "We want Clemson" tongue-in-cheek alongside of "We want Bama"). Woody Dantzler was still the backup to Brandon Streeter in Tommy Bowden's new offense when we got you. We had a very, very experienced team. The timing of the game was very fortunate for us.

Sorry you perceive that as "whiny." I really think it's just a misunderstanding from a fan of a school that prints money toward fans of a school that really has to fight tooth and nail for everything. Your older fans will remember you being that kind of school within SC, too, and on an larger scale with the ACC, but you guys outgrew that long, long ago. Your younger fans will never know anything better than having the best facilities. You earned that through hard and smart work. You're not a traditional "blue blood" athletics program... you've certainly earned your way there.

Guy made his case and brought his facts and observations in a respectful manner.

Marshall and my UNC Tar Heels may be on a collision course to meet in the Final Four provided the Herd gets past Georgetown and UNC defeats the Deacons. In such case, the Cary location should provide the Heels with a decided home field advantage.

College soccer has a serious problem with players complaining to officials

It makes it hard to watch at times actually. The little disputes with where free kicks and taken from and where throw ins are.

I know one of the Marshall players thought he was fouled late into overtime and promptly got up and marched straight to the ref and got close to him, yelling at him the entire time. There’s just way too much if that among all teams.

That’s about the Ref being a coward. Dissent is a cardable offense.

Soccer officiating within the US is in general terrible. Having kids that played the game for 10+ years each, I had to study a bit so that I could understand what I was seeing. After you have read “The Laws of the Game” many, many, many times, the only conclusion you can come to is
1 - Soccer officiating in the US is really bad.

I had to read the LOTG so that I could understand what I was seeing. After reading the LOTG, I came to understand that a great many Ref’s ignore whatever part of the LOTG that they feel like ignoring. It’s a very European/ English point of view and it boils down to one simple statement.

Don’t question authority.

Which is of course the antithesis of what it means to be American. We did after all form our country by telling the most powerful leader/country in the world at that time, to pound sand. Americans are bred to question authority and pitch a big ol’ stink when authority is wrong. Soccer don’t play that. Soccer Ref’s are omnipotent and the region of the world where soccer originated, the people bow down to omnipotence. Americans don’t, so Americans struggle with soccer.

it’s not any different than refs and umpires in any other sport.

Baseball, basketball and football are controlled by the refs far more than soccer is.

This game should have ended 1-0 Marshall, there should have been no OT no OT 2 and no PKs. Johnson was clearly offsides when he scored, flag should have went up. And those of you who think you dominated the ball, well I went though the game and Marshall had possession of the ball 55% of the game.

I'll take Coach Chris Grassie and his players over the Clemson players any day. They had more grit, more passion and more will to win. They may not have been the 4 or 5 star players, they may have not been a top 100 recruit but they are good and are coached well.

And to think this is only the 2nd time Marshall has been in the NCAAs. Made it the 1st time in 2019, with a 11 seed and Sweet 16.

In 4 years Grassie has 2 Conference Coach of the Year, 42 wins (26 in last 2 years), 15 weeks straight in T25, 16 T25 wins, 2 Conference titles (Back to Back), 3 NCAA wins (WVU, Fordham, #1 Clemson (PK)), a Sweet 16 (2019) and Elite 8 (2020) and the season isn't over.

Totally Determines who had more passion and will to win.

It was an even battle for 110 minutes. Don’t tell me Clemson players didn’t want to win. The “wanted it more” stuff is always such BS. Especially when the difference in who won and lost was 1 penalty kick

They beat us. Both in 1999 and in the soccer match this past

week. Pretty simple. In 1999, they had a better team and they beat us, deserved to win. They finished the season undefeated and ranked #10 in the country.

Soccer is different. It is not uncommon, at all, for the better team to lose or draw. Even at the highest levels. Their fans were loud and proud on the telecast. Good for them, it stood out. They were well coached and they played us really well, excellent tactics for them to try beat us (a better team).

Once they had the goal, the draw even, it was smart on their part to play defensively and play a counter-pressing style.

It is much, much easier to destroy in soccer than it is to create. They are really well-coached. I hope that coach (who has been successful at every level) does not end up in the ACC. He is really good.

Both teams wanted to win, desperately so, they both played their hearts out - passion and desire were not the issue, ridiculous to suggest it, and offensive to Coach Noonan (Clemson) and the Clemson players who gave their absolutely best out on the pitch.

Where did you see the possession statistics? I am surprised by the 55% you mentioned, it did not "feel" that way, but I was not tracking it. Also, the number of SOGs and CKs favored Clemson, CKs drastically so. About 1/3 goals are scored off of set pieces. Clemson did not take advantage of the many corners it had, we should have. It came back to haunt us.
