Never been a soccer fan, just didn't grow up with

Dec 12, 2021, 8:40 PM

it. But really enjoyed watching the videos of the celebrations and how many fans we had up there.

I do remember the first title. I.M. Ibrahim personally asked dad if he would call the Final 4 on radio. Dad was like me, and knew nothing about the game. He told coach as such, that he'd love to be a part of it, but would have no idea how to call it. I do remember listening to the game with him, and celebrating the win with a cold one. He joked he didn't get to call the first titles on the radio in football or futball ??

Don’t seem like 20. You know back in the day there wasn’t many on tv. Dad and myself listened to all that wasn’t on tv and sometimes we just turned the volume down on the tv and watched it and listened to Jim. Who was in the booth with him? All I remember is your dad.

Changed a lot over the years

Dec 12, 2021, 9:18 PM

Former Associate SID Jerry Arp did games for a while. DJ out of Greenville Scott Shannon. Ken Allison who posts here some for several years. Former recruiting director under Danny, Clyde Wrenn and Tim Bourret were a team for several years. When Bob Bradley retired Tim had to move on to those duties. Mike Eppley several years. Rodney on the sidelines those years. Tim did all the basketball with him. Bob Mahoney baseball.

Well, like most, I grew up listening to your dad every Saturday. Grew up on a small farm in the Pee Dee with no cable or satellite. There would be maybe 2 or 3 games a year on TV, so every Saturday was spent with a radio on listening to Jim Phillips. Remember having to give my Dad score updates, or having a radio on close by while working.

Lot of work back then but good memories.

a Bob Fulton anecdote

Dec 12, 2021, 9:51 PM

So I live in the midlands and ran into Bob Fulton when he was still with us. Got to talking to him and he found out I was a Clemson alum and listened to Jim on the radio when I was growing up. Fulton was effusive about your dad and said not only did he represent the best of Clemson nation but the best in his profession across the country. The respect he had for Jim was overflowing in that conversation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dad and Bob were extremely close

Dec 12, 2021, 10:02 PM

when dad died the idea came to me to have Bob speak at the funeral. Then it was like, wait a minute, let's have him call a drive on the radio at the game that Saturday. Bob had been retired 10 years by that point and was nervous as all get out about it. Whitehurst took the team right down the field for a TD. I still remember all the fans in front of the radio booth not watching the game, but rather Bob in the booth call a Clemson game with grins on their faces and radios on.

Dad honored Bob at his last game in 1994 at the game in Clemson at halftime. Turns out due to that Bob missed calling that screwy kickoff return they had that year.

Bob returned the favor after dad died in 2003. That was 63-17 ??

Dec 13, 2021, 7:06 AM

That Max Lennon didn't like the power Danny had and took advantage of the conflict.

One thing dad did was support the coaches, that's why they trusted him. Dad taught Danny a lot about dealing with the media, especially early in Danny's career when Danny didn't know much. They were professional friends. But when Hatfield became the coach, he supported him. It really upset him how some fans treated Hatfield. Not that they didn't like the losing, but the vicious attacks. All Ken did was take a better job and learn the hard way don't replace a legend.

He was close to a lot of coaches, mostly the ones who really came under fire like Tommy West, Larry Shyatt as he became a confidant. But also he and Bill Wilhelm loved each other. A lot of the hoops coaches. Bobby Robert's, Bill Foster, even Tates. The guy that Stumped him was Barnes. He loved Rick. That move shocked him as much as any.
