Ain't no way! Don't touch my thermostat.....

Jun 21, 2021, 10:40 AM

Much less have skynet messing with my gear.

I'd swap to analog with the swiftness. Good to know they can before I ever purchase one

This is why I tell my son a career as a YouTube influencer is not a good career, as you are not in control of it. Say something bad, or controversial, or whatever, and Google can boot you. Not a solid career choice IMO.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I follow a few youtube channels, and have noticed

Jun 21, 2021, 11:51 AM [ in reply to You can buy a dumb phone, or an old fashion thermostat ]

that the more popular Youtube guys are all intertwined with other youtubers and outside events. Most didn't start as youtubers, that was just another outlet.

Just with the more popular car channels, Tyler Hoover (on Barrett Jackson this week and has been on Motor Trend before) has Hoovies Garage, is involved the Car Wizard, who is involved with Jared and Tavarish (wrench every day), who is involved with Ed Bolian (vinwiki), who is into seemingly everything car related, and they are all involved with Dennis Collins (Collins Bros Jeep/Richard Rawlings/Fast and Loud), and somehow, they are all involved with Doug Demuro who has his own car bidding website.

There are some of the younger guys like Whistlin' Diesel who has gotten popular, but I'd bet in 5 years he won't even be around. There's only so many times you can wreck a truck, or drop a Hilux from a helicopter (along with the Diesel Brothers from Discovery) that is interesting, or even funny. And who knows where the money really comes from to seed this nonsense.

On the fishing channel side, Nick Stanzcyk has probably one of the biggest salt water fishing channels, and owns two Freeman charter boats. But his parents own Bud and Mary's marina in Islamorada, so he didn't just fall into being a captain/fishing guide on youtube; He was born into it. The youtube channel and the corresponding merchandise are all from being a guide since he was about 15. He'd be doing that with, our without, youtube.

The Gale Force twins are cute twins who are fishing captains, who used to be mates on a smaller party/head boats. I'd guess most follow them because of their looks, but they are pretty instructional, and legit talented--and had to work at being captains before they started doing what they do now. But look at some of the bikini fishing chicks like Darcizzle and Fishing with Luiza and see how long you can sit through that. They just get annoying AF after about 5 minutes. And they're hot.

Point is, I don't think starting and staying popular/ relevant on youtube is as easy as one might think. Unless you can make millions and live off it forever, I don't know how anyone can make a sole career from it.

Sure, you've build a nice portfolio for yourself but I bet somewhere along the line you've admitted why you quit the "real world" and as a boss I may not like that.

But I'd think you'd have to have a LOT of regular viewers and growing subscription numbers to make money at it. I can't imagine the content necessary around doing a hobby..whatever that hobby is. You probably get about 20-30 seconds for someone to watch your channel before they give up and find another one that is more interesting, or stick around to see what you are doing. You gotta have some kind of hook there. I'm probably subscribed to 100 channels...and watch about 15-20 regularly. And even some of this I get bored with after a while.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't watch a lot of youtube, but my 13 yo is obsessed

with watching other people play video games. I'll sit there and watch with him, and sometimes the youtuber is funny in the commentary, but you can tell the draw to them is that they don't take it too seriously. Like, they're not great at the game etc. and don't get butthurt about it.

In the end, if it means I don't shell out $60 for a video game, i'm ok with it.

I tend to watch videos of Las Vegas reviews etc. as I prep for my trip out there in November.

bit more to make a living. I think Den of Tools post something ever day, VCG is pretty prolific too. I think Kent Rollins only does one a week, but I'm sure most are like me and watch one time for entertainment and then again a few times if they want to try to cook whatever it is.

My legit goal is to get to the point where a video makes money or somebody sends me free stuff. I also hope it is a vehicle to push sales as I do more of the bird house kits that I'll have up on Etsy eventually.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why not put them up on Etsy now?

Jun 21, 2021, 12:32 PM

Use your channel as a "how to". Make then easy to put together and chicks will eat it up buying it.

I saw a guy polishing a boat yesterday that is selling "kits" of stuff he uses and puts together. He's not building anything. Seemed like a pretty easy, good idea.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am most of the way to the Etsy shop.

Jun 21, 2021, 12:34 PM

I worked last night on printed instructions for the one I've already filmed. I need to get some bank stuff setup as I don't want to use my real account on Etsy then I'll be all set.

or an aircraft carrier gets taken out by Skynet using a mass distributed bot system that's implanted on every coffee maker, refrigerator and washing machine that has an IP address...maybe we'll all understand why the IoT was such a terrible idea?

Who is going to patch all these cameras, lamps, refrigerators, and Chinese thermostats that have a scaled down linux kernel an and IP address? Nobody. Most of it was probably built with built in root kits to begin with. 2 years from now the manufacturer has either closed, or fired everyone who even knew they made that stuff, there it sits and does whatever it does, as long as whatever it is still is plugged in, and still glomming onto to someone's equally old router connected to their wifi.

THAT'S the kind of stuff I sit around and think about and go "Thats gonna be really bad one day".

Jun 21, 2021, 7:28 PM [ in reply to There's a reason why tech people don't want their houses ]

"early adopters" of all the new-fangled gadgetry are just blissfully unaware. Having spent 35+ years in high-tech and software... Nope, I stay off the grid as much as possible, in terms of "smart devices" and interconnecting everything. The more you know about the behind-the-scenes, nuts & bolts of all that crap, the less you engage with it. It's insidious.

But people need to appear hip and cool and bleeding edge.....
