From my porch can see some of the pros hoping to do well in the Bassmaster Classic. They have good weather and good water this year. Water temps are up to 60 right now, lake is a few inches off full pond.

Its not that simple. Back in the 60's a plan was devised when folks had no clue. Now Lake Russell and Lake Thurmond have to be considered in the mix. The lakes are balanced together, and there must be down river water to suport the snail darters.
The plan for Hartwell is full pond between April 1 and October 15. The plan calls to drop the lake 5' for Winter. The Corps endeavor to do that even though they agree a new plan is needed. The Corps do not have control of the plan.
A new plan cannot be formed due to politics. Too many hands are now in the pot. Every local politician, and every state politician, and every federal politician claims they will change things if elected. They lie as they know they cannot. Control of the Savannah River is in the hands of "countless idiots" from the mountains to the sea in SC and Georgia. A new plan will never be agreed on by all, even though all agree a better one is needed for today's river.
Lake Hartwell goes in and out. I have lived on it for over 20 years. It is a great lake to live on. All docks float. I move mine in, and I move it out. Make no mistake, there is always lots of water in the lake. Even if Ruskies blow up the ###, the Tugaloo River will keep flowing.
Here it is today:
The green line is the plan the Corps hopes to follow. Some times drought or storms make that impossible. If they could be more flexible, they could do much better.

no, it is not Bill Dance, but I used to watch his show, it was pretty good. Jimmy Houston Outdoors was pretty good for comedy vlaue. That guy was not qualified to pump gas, but he could pull in some Bass.

As you gain maturity (get old) you will be glad you have less friends and family sucking the life out of you.

Fishing aint that hard. Dangle a bait and the fish bite that and the hook. My Pop taught me. In his day as a kid it was for food --> not fun, so he was good! My Pop could catch fish.
Now I am a more "educated" fisherman. I "catch and release" as my Bride refuses to clean them for her "Man". I have thousands of $$ in gear and will upgrade for any new crap as I am a sucker. I keep up with a million parameters. Catching fish is now a science. It takes a computer.

But I lived in NJ and there were not many places within biking distance of my house where I could catch bass, except for Strawbridge Lake, which also served as storm runoff.. I became a pretty accomplished bass fisherman myself because, to the best of my knowledge, have the lake record at Strawbridge Lake in Cherry Hill NJ(1.25lbs).

Strange --- At Clemson the only guy who would walk to the lake with me to fish was from NJ. His goal was to be a dentist.

have to go a long way to find fishing, and there are not many Bass because most of the lakes are acidic. So when you can walk to a spot, it is an added convenience. We had a nice little john boat with an electric motor that we would haul down to lake Hartwell. We spent entire days just floating around out there, and jumping off the train trestle that ran parallel to 123. I miss being 20.

We’d always hurt a case of beer (each) and live like kings until sundown. Then we’d go get ready to get a buzz on.

One time my best buddy (at Gardner–Webb) came over to Clemson with a canoe. He was from a wealthy family. We tied a quart of gin and drug it behind as we fished (to keep it cool). It was a great day fishing. Ted had skills, became a Green Beret.

I still fish in NJ but it is for trout which is stocked in the spring and fall.
Bass is in the northern lakes and they can get big but nothing like the south.

Have to catch your poundage of fish, then clean, cook, and eat all of it. Anything not eaten does not count.
