So... what's the big deal with tree view vs threaded? I've

probably never even played around with those settings, I guess threaded is the default and I just never had a problem with it. I just did for the helluva it, and tree view seems like more of a hassle... you have to click on each reply to see it, rather than just scrolling and reading them all. What am I missing?

In tree view, you get the post and then the thread its in laid out below it.
In threaded, you get all the posts in the thread down the page.

The difference is where there is a thread

with a lot of subconversations. So X says blah, blah blah, blah and Y says BS and then they go back and forth for 10 posts arguing and then someone responds to Y's third post and someone responds to X's second post and someone responds to the original - it starts to get hard to track which reply is to which post.

Tree view, you don't have to view any post you don't care
May 12, 2022, 11:02 AM
|

about beyond the subject. Threaded forces you to see/scroll past every single post in a thread. That is easily the most annoying thing about Thread for me. That, and not being able to tell who's replying to who or what.

True... but is also means you might miss good posts just

because the "subject line" didn't seem interesting. A lot of times the subject line can be rather bland, or even just a "Re:" of the OP... but the post itself is good.
I guess now I understand how sometimes I see people ask redundant questions that have already been answered in a previous post. They just skipped over it and never saw it...

OK here's threaded vs tree as I see it, chrome browser on PC

Threaded... I can easily see everything, each reply, who posted it, the TU's, etc... just scroll down.
Tree View ...all I see are the reply subject lines... so you have to click on each individual reply to read it? How in the world is that not a massive hassle? I don't get it...

I think the preferences of tree vs threaded must be related

to how you Tnet. I worked in the S/W industry and even if I had to go into an office, it was not unusual for everybody to have about a dozen or more windows open at all times. S/W companies tend to be very laid-back, and nobody cared how many were work-related and how many were news, sports, weather, etc. Tnetting on a big screen monitor with mouse... scrolling is no problem. And I worked from home about 15 of the last 20 years of my work life, so nobody knew what I was doing anyway, or cared as long as I was getting my job done. Again, big screen with a mouse.
I guess if you have some azzhole boss who's looking over your shoulder all the time and you're having to "sneak" and Tnet on your phone, or you travel a lot and not always sitting at a big screen... I guess that makes a difference. I hate trying to Tnet on a phone and only do it as a last resort, like I'm on vacation and both my GF and I forgot to bring a tablet. I can probably count on both hands the times I've Tnetted on a phone...

To me it is all about saving clicks.

scrolling is a lot faster than clicking, and I'm clicking the TU a lot, why would I want to click every post to read it?

I rarely remember there is a thumbs up button, but when I do, I usually hit the whole thread top to bottom.
