Chase Brice

Oct 21, 2018, 10:39 PM

Do you think Chase is a better passer than Bryant was ? Do you feel like we would have a better shot at winning with him as qb1 if Trevor went out ??

I think Chase Brice is not just better than KB, I actually think he has moments when he’s better than Trevor (don’t kill me). Chase is a tough, gritty player. I’d love to see him play more.

A lot of players in the 4th quarter really shone. I was so proud of how well they played. Special mention of Nolan Turner, #24. He stood out.

at any time for us - it's all team there and he has the chops. Hope he gets some earlier opportunities in games ahead. No slight on TL at all either but those two present a better duo than Kelly and Trevor did, and that might be what it takes to go the distance this year.

No, KB2 would have killed Cuse. He was 7 for 7 and 100 plus yards against them last year before hurting his ankle. KB2 is a much better QB than most fans give him credit for and they’ll see that next year. I still feel that all the negative comments on social media, including TigerNet was a major factor in him leaving.

If KB quit the team at least partially due to posters on TigerNet then he needs a lot more than just a new team.

And yes CB throws a nice ball. Better than KB in some cases.

Re: Chase Brice

Oct 22, 2018, 8:11 AM [ in reply to Re: Chase Brice ]

I feel him becoming 2nd string was a major factor all else was minor. Next I think CB is half the athlete but more of a QB than KB. I think KB wouldve struggled against the pack because they forced us to throw just like they did last year where KB looked terrible. CB came in and marched the ball as well.

Re: negative comments

Oct 22, 2018, 8:28 AM [ in reply to Re: Chase Brice ]

If negative comments drove Kelly away, so be it. So how does he plan to make it at the next level without hearing criticism?

As a performer of any kind, criticism is part of the landscape. You either 1) ignore it 2) use it to motivate you or 3) find the elements in it that can help you improve. Critics aren't always wrong.

Tigernet isn't always for the soft, but it's dang softer than a lot of other schools' comment boards. Tigernet is very supportive of our Tigers. An absence of criticism becomes an echo chamber where we enable and encourage mediocrity.

Oct 22, 2018, 8:43 PM [ in reply to Re: Chase Brice ]

We’re better off without him. That becomes clearer every week. And we would have been better off getting Hunter Johnson, who is a real QB, ready to play last year. HE would have beaten Syracuse if he had the team at that point in the season.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again for your benefit - my granny could have beaten those pathetic coot and miami teams last year with our defense. And he ain’t gonna be the answer for Arky, the tarholes, or anyone else as a QB.

Re: KB vs Cuse

Oct 23, 2018, 12:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Chase Brice ]

Espn gamecast might be in error about when exactly KB exited the Cuse game, but they show his statline as 12-17 for 116 yards, an avg of 6.8 YPA.

More importantly, he only led us to 7 offensive points, though he can't be blamed for Spence missing a FG. He took 1 sack while hobbled. The D also scored a TD in the first half.

Zerrick was 10-14 for 88 yards, an avg of 6.3 YPA.

Cooper led us to 10 points. Spence both made one and missed one FG with Cooper as QB. He took 3 sacks.

In other words, as bad as we thought Cooper was, he was almost Kelly's equal. Was Kelly bad?

Spence was bad in his first game after Heugel's injury, and the defense stunk.

But no, Kelly wasn't on fire, and he didn't hurt his ankle in the game. His ankle was already heavily wrapped and he didn't practice all week because he was practically immobile. He left the game when he was knocked out cold on a tackle that was unpenalized.

Re: Chase Brice

Oct 21, 2018, 11:43 PM

Yes on the first, probably not on the second. KB's scrambling ability paid off for us a good bit. If KB were still here, we'd probably still get the ACC championship and get in the playoffs. With TL we will probably still get the ACC Championship and get in the playoffs. With Chase we'd have a chance to win the ACC but maybe less likely because he does not have the scrambling capability and not as good an arm as TL. The difference is what would happen in the playoffs. With KB whenever we meet Bamer we have a replay of last year. With TL we have a shot. It ain't a great one, because no one has seen a Bamer team recently that is equally good at running and passing. And they were dang near unbeatable when the ran 90% of the time. But a shot. I'd say 35 to 40%. KB's bad luck was that he played in a time that there was only one team he could probably not beat, and yet he had to try and beat them.

As a guy who went to Clemson during the Hootie era, when we sweated out beating the Citadel 10-7, I like our chances fine. And better yet, with Jimbo gone, I do not see anybody in the ACC seriously challenging Clemson year in and year out, at least until Dabo gets soft inthe head. If the theory is that the ACC is "weak," fine. I think it is bogus. I believe there is no one in the Big 10 or Pac 10 that could win the ACC, perhaps even if her were no Clemson. But we'll take our chances of being undefeated to get in the playoffs. And if the only outfit that is capable of recruiting at our level and developing players at our level is Saban, so be it. Let them get through the SEC West every year. And if they make it through we'll take our shot. The elephants better get used to seeing us.

For KB, I hope he goes to Arky and does well. UNCHEAT would be a little uncomfortable as we have to play them in CH next year. And after all they are the sorry Bluebellies. I hope he gets a shot in the NFL. I don't like all the trash alienating him from Clemson and the Clemson fan base. I think Chad has talked with him and told him he needed to dial it back, as well he should. There is no reason that KB should be alienated from Clemson and the fan base. He is a Clemosn grad. He needs to come back on campus during homecomings in the future and be recognized for what he has done for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: better than KB

Oct 22, 2018, 8:13 AM

I could buy either of your first two paragraphs, but not both. They are contradictory.

How can you say "KB takes us to the playoffs" but then turn around and say "the ACC is not down this year"? The only way we win out with KB is if the ACC is down.

Look at facts: KB's passing numbers were better than last year, but he still couldn't generate points. Even against Furman. That's because--i know you've heard it a 1000 times but apparently you still don't believe it--teams can load the box against Kelly. We were one of the nation's worst at third down conversions under Kelly this year, and our RBs were never going to be proficient with the KB keeper always being our first option. His running numbers were down. But most importantly, the team numbers were poor. He also generates far fewer big plays than Trevor. Well, if you don't generate big plays, and you fail to convert third downs, how you plan on scoring points, Freddy?

Don't tell me to trust the D. Those fellas came back to play for a Natty, not so they could nursemaid an immature offense.

In fact, the only way KB gets a shot as an NFL QB is if he takes the next 6 months to change his game, and then proves on the field that he can be proficient in it. Unless he goes to an option program, the current KB will never play football again after Game 6 in 2019, because ALL teams will load the box against him until he can beat them with his arm. And option QBs don't go to the NFL.

I hope he proves me right by changing his game.

I agree with your post with the exception of feeling we would lose to Syracuse when TL went down. I actually had no expectation as I hadn't seen enough of Chase to know what to expect.
I sure like what I've seen of him up to this point and have no problem with him being in the game at any time.

Chase Brice has a lot of upside. KB had hit his ceiling.

Dec 1, 2010, 1:09 PM

Earlier, I thought KB leaving was putting us in a huge bind if we had an injury to TL.

After the Syracuse game and seeing how Bruce took the guys down the field to score against NCSU, I now believe KB leaving was the very best thing for Clemson this year and down the road.

Brice will only get better with experience and his confidence will grow.

If KB had stayed the remainder of the year, Brice would have received minimal playing time and would not have developed the way he has.

Many thanks to KB for last year. Hope he finds a good home in 2019 and hope we don’t have to talk too much more about him on Tiger Net.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Chase Brice has a lot of upside. KB had hit his ceiling.

Oct 23, 2018, 12:16 AM

We all wondered at KB's "slap in the face" statement.

After much ponderance, I've arrived at a conclusion. How could Kelly not know that under Dabo the best player regardless of position or seniority would play more but second best will still play alot? How could that be offensive? Why would this cause him to quit the team?

My conjectured answer: it didn't.

What caused KB to quit the team, what offended him and insulted him, what made him realize that he would have better opportunities elsewhere was one little thing Dabo REFUSED to say:

"I guarantee you that Chase Brice will not pass you on the depth chart. You will not drop to third string."

Given what we have seen from Chase, Kelly was right to read the writing on the wall.
