To Old Timers Like Me: A Comparison From The 1980's

Oct 3, 2018, 3:49 PM

When I saw Eitene take over in the 4th Qtr, I swear it reminded me if Terrence Flaggler in the 1980's running down hill..

There was one game that I think Rodney Williams had to QB a long drive and Flagger made some big plays and I want to say at UGa because my memory had the Tigers in all white..

Help me my fellow old timers...

Either way, the 4th qtr was old-school 1980's Clemson football and it was fun to watch our offense act like a BOA Constrictor squeezing the life out of Syracuse be running the ball down their throats.

I go all the way back to the late 50's...

and, you know, I turned to my old Clemson roommate (from 1968) going into the 4th quarter and said, "we need the old Frank Howard offense: up the middle, up the middle, pass..." and I'll leave out the "...punt." Finally, the OCs caught onto what they needed to do. Put the ball in Travis' hands (or Tavien, or Adam) and run it down their throats... pass only when absolutely necessary. Isn't it amazing what happens in the passing game when the running game is working?

go Tigers!

In 1989, the Tigers ran it down the coots throats 45-0.

And it was a sight to behold. They had every cop in attendance protecting their goal posts after the game ended!

to be fair, is there anything that doesn’t go down a coots throat?

It actually did remind me of eighties Clemson football. Had that feel to it.
GO TIGERS!!!!!!

We could Flower and Flagler teams to exhaustion

back then and rely on our defense, a lot like last Saturday.

What we couldn't do was get down to a pass happy team and make quick comebacks like we have the ability now.

No better feeling than running it well even when they load up to stop you

Yep that’s why I thought it was ridiculous of Tony Elliot to say we couldn’t run against 7 in the box earlier this year. Eight maybe can still run, nine time to pass but seven you better jam it down their throats.

I believe it was 1986 Clemson at Georgia. I was at that game in Athens. This is thehe game Trewell kicked a 47 yarder to win. If it's the same game you're thinking of, Kenny Flowers got hurt in the first half and Flagler came in and saved the day. All white uni's and it was hot as Hades that day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that's the game

Oct 3, 2018, 4:55 PM

When you said Kenny Flowers got hurt that was the trigger..I do remember Flowers going down and Flagger stepping up...I think there was on play where Rodney Williams hit Flagger on a Wheel Route while we were pinned back....The 86 and 87 Uga games are legendary wars and it was a privilege to see them live.

Yep, that 87 UGA game was a thriller

Oct 3, 2018, 5:26 PM

Late in the game, my roomate an I looked at each other and said "safety and a field goal" Sure enough, we pinned them on their goal line, for some reason Dooley called a sweep, and we caught QB Jackson in the end zone for 2. Then a drive for the ages to set up Treadwell the dog killer.

We also had a great game at Maryland somewhere about that time. Jim Riggs had to pull in a monster pass on like 4th and 10 or something to keep a game winning drive alive. That was a cardiac year...so many games decided by the last drive.

Was sitting in the end zone stands behind our offense for

that last drive. Awesome! The wheel route was a heck of a catch by the back. Did not remember who Williams threw that one to.
