Mafah & Shipley

Any early guesses as to either of these Freshmen getting some touches against Georgia? Dabo typically doesn’t do that in a big early game. Of course Tommy Bowden would give them the first touch of the game. I don’t see this happening. It will be showtime and for our leaders to take charge out of the gates.
I would like to see Mafah on a goal line situation. Also like to dink one out in the open to Shipley to burn one to the house.

Using a syllogism:
1. The key to earning playing time for a young running back is being able to pick up the blitz. 2. UGA will probably have several exotic blitz packages designed to confused the OL and DJ.
Therefore,
I doubt either will get significant snaps against UGA.
(Long season. They will earn plenty of PT as the season goes along.)

Yep, and the last thing our team needs playing against UGA, is a turnover!!!

Yup, and Lyn-J/Pace have already proven they can handle the pass protection blocking as an RB.
Games like these make me miss Wayne Gallman. He was so solid at picking up those funky blitz packages and keeping DW from getting hit early.
Lack of pass pro ability was my only issue with ETN. He got outright pancaked in some cases when picking up blitzers.

I think they both get snaps but in the second half once we get a BIG lead. 6 minutes Togo in the 3rd quarter Shipley breaks one for a TD as Herby says Dabo has an embarrassment of riches!

It will be impossible to know this until August. Shipley would probably have a better chance because he is the more versatile of the two and is always a threat to take it to the house. It would be a tall order for Mafah to start his first game against their front 7, but I do think he is special and will climb the depth chart very quickly.

Well, if the guys on the depth chart ahead them isn't getting the job done, I'm sure that Dabo would give a couple of chances. But it would be to early in the season to be trusting True Freshman with the ball against a team like Georgia, especially if the older guys are doing their job well running the ball. If it were against one of our usual cupcake openers at the start of the season, they would get plenty of touches I imagine!!!!

I think Shipley might have a few designed plays to get the ball in passing game. Mafah will have to show that he’s just too talented to be kept off the field during fall camp in order to get any touches against GA. I foresee Dixon and Pace to split them about 50-50. But by seasons end Dixon might be over taken and he may even transfer for one more season since COVID provided him an extra year.

Mafah is a great option in goal line situations

IMO, that is where he'll see his first action. Could happen in the opener. The ability to get one or two tough yards better than anyone else on the team is an obvious skill that can be used early on.
I just don't see Shipley playing against UGA. Anything is possible but I doubt it very much.

Everybody is forgetting about/underestimating Dixon. Having said that, we have a very deep, very talented stable of RBs, all of whom bring a little something different and special to the position.

because let's face it defenses will be gunning for DJ---knowing full well we have no depth behind him.
Just spitballin' here but if I had to bet, I'd wager Shipley sees the field before Mafah. But Mafah is the real deal and it won't be long before he works his way into the RB rotation.

In honor of our new rb coach - I want to see a CJ Spiller wheel route …
With CJ Spiller results ….TD Shipley …
I agree Mafah will earn his spot .. but this early in the year - Shipley is more versatile…

I still have images of CJ running wild (and yes, a TD on a wheel route) over the 'Canes in Miami....that was by far the best game CJ ever played in a Clemson uniform---hands down.

Shipley because he can catch a football. If Mafah can catch, put him in.

I think Shipley

By the comments from coaches and teammates it seems like Shipley is too talented to leave on the bench. I think he returns kickoffs and gets limited plays (maybe in the slot) on offense.
