Keys to the Game Tonight

Jan 28, 2018, 11:30 AM

As much as I don't want us to rely on the 3-point shot, I really think it is the key to us winning big games and closing out this season well.

In our 4 losses this year, we have shot 29% from three. Obviously the UVA game skews this a bit, but take that game out and we still have shot only 33% from the line. This is compounded by the fact that when we get down in a game we tend to take a LOT of three point shots (26 against temple, 31 against UNC).

I looked at our 5 biggest wins (Miami, Louisville, OSU, UF, and ND) and we have shot 44% from three in these games. We have also taken less threes in these games, making a better percentage.

So the biggest key tonight for me is to hit some timely three's in the first half to avoid getting into a hole on the road. If we can do this, we will need to get to the foul line more in the second half.

Oh, and we need to try to keep that Okogie kid in check he is good! Need a big win tonight to show we can still compete without Grantham.

GO TIGERS

Donte's absence will make other teams believe

Jan 28, 2018, 11:51 AM

all they'll have to do---at least initially---is to take Elijah and Marcquise out of the game offensively (which UVa did remarkably well) to have an good chance of defeating the Tigers. Gabe has certainly contributed offensively the last few games and will need to continue doing so.....we need a strong game from Shelton tonight as well.....that would go a long way towards helping overcome Dontae's absence AND keep a little pressure off freshman and new starter Aamir.

But more than anything else, the Tigers desperately need to cut their turnover numbers in half. Sloppy, unintelligent play continues to plague this team (and at one point early in the season, it looked like they were really focused on their game plan and on much better passing than they've demonstrated of late).....oh yeah.....Elijah's going to have to stay out of foul difficulty for the remainder of the season.

This is a game the Tigers can ill-afford to lose for several reasons. They've had an entire week to focus on playing without Dontae's floor leadership and experience. Time to prove they've learned to adapt to a crappy turn of events.

Also Simms, Donnel, Skara need to play good and ...

My analysis is, EVERYBODY needs to play well ... no lolly-gagging and

Take it to the hoop !

Kick out to the open man !

Play defense like mad men ! (see UVa, the "new Havoc")

The Prime Directive: SCORE MORE POINTS THEN THE OTHER TEAM

Do this, and be glad

I believe Aamir had the most pressure he will face as a young player on Tuesday - starting in his first game back home in Virginia, on the short week, after Grantham went down. The kid can play and other freshman have had successful campaigns in year one. He has shown that the stage is not too big for him and I believe he gets better and better moving forward. Looks like he very well is the biggest Tiger commit to sign under Brownell. Especially considering; Dante went down for the season.

Losing Grantham turned us from good to mediocre at this...

Jan 28, 2018, 12:46 PM

stage. Tonight is a must win vs another mediocre team. Hopefully we start to gel as the season moves along and become a good team again, but I kind of have my doubts. I still support the team completely and I think we sneak/limp into the tournament. I just believe losing Grantham was our downfall. I obviously hope I am way off. I am looking forward to this game tonight in hopes of us doing something special so I can regain some excitement.
