For Bored Theologians an biblical question

Apr 17, 2022, 5:19 PM

Two mega Starbucks ritghteous gemstone churches here were advertising Easter festivities. My question is - which of the two church activities is more biblically correct?

1. They had Jesus in a helicopter dropping plastic eggs of candy for the kids

2. Had Jesus riding a giant bunny { dressed up horse} giving out candy

I have scrubbed verse and cannot find reference

I would need more information, but based solely on the information you gave, I would suspect that those two churches lean heavily on attempting to attract and entertain the masses than they do on worshipping and serving the Lord.

They are called "worship services" not "entertainment services" for a reason.

Unfortunately too many people walk in on Sunday morning looking for an "Entertain Me Service."

Yep. Bottom line don't go to either church. Entertainment is not worship and neither of those choices are worthy of the Lord God. Easter egg hunt.. fine. Including "Jesus" for the sake of the outrageous.. that is blasphemous. Shake their dirt off your shoes and go to a worthy and sacred house of the living God.

Exactly. There reasoning is. You have to keep the teenagers entertained or they won't come. And if their kids stop coming or it's a struggle and fight every Sunday morning to get the their teens to church tge parents will eventually stop coming as well.

Is it better to have a Church with 40 people in it that are all Bible believing and practicing Christians? Or to have a Mega Church with 3000 people attending but only 40 are true Bible believing Christians? The remainder are either there for the entertainment or to find a girlfriend/husband or to meet influential people as to meet potential clients/customers. Or to show off in there Sunday finest clothes, skirts, latest hairdo, fashion, car, etc...

Sounds similar to the Christmas Eve service I attended at a sister church a few years ago where Santa Claus is Coming to Town was sung at the end.

It matters not, forget all that nonsense and go find a quiet place to pray. Easter has its roots in pagan rituals, nothing more than a celebration of the rebirth of the earth after the first full moon after the solstice. Jesus never spoke of it, nor would he. Rabbits are a symbol of fertility from pagan rituals spanning thousands of years and have no connection to any form of religion. Free yourself from all that nonsense, and spend your time focusing on God and the immaterial gifts he gives you, food, water, life, children …and not on the distractions provided by the creations of mankind , Including plastic eggs, chocolate , and rabbits

Re: For Bored Theologians an biblical question

Apr 17, 2022, 6:16 PM

Well, if either activity reaches someone who is lost and results in them being brought to salvation, then both possibly. The Bible states to “go into the world and make disciples” it doesn’t put parameters on how. Our world needs any outreach from Christ it can get and if this is what it takes to reach someone who may have never been reached thru traditional methods, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Christians need to focus on fighting the enemy, not fellow Christians who do things differently than they do.

Re: For Bored Theologians an biblical question

Apr 17, 2022, 7:42 PM

Wrong. A disciple is a follower of Jesus who goes out into the world and teaches about Jesus' teachings. Not becoming worldly so the worldly will like your worldly message. Therefore having a false conversion that rarely last.
We must as real Christians be in the world, but not of the world.
JOHN ch. 17 vs. 15-16.

Re: For Bored Theologians an biblical question

What is “wrong” exactly? I didn’t define a disciple in my post and I agree with your definition. Jesus dined with tax collectors and sinners, not church people. To reach the world, we must reach into the world. Ive played guitar at a couple of those “rock concert entertainment” churches people are referring to on here for over a decade and have seen hundreds of people come to know Christ, Many who would have never stepped foot in a more “traditional” church. I don’t have a problem with traditional churches, but I, and many others, feel more comfortable In a contemporary church. There is no wrong way to worship except insincerely.

Both are historically accurate representations of events, but the days are wrong. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey last Sunday(Palm Sunday) this would have been the Easter horse bunny thing. As far as Jesus in the helicopter….well that doesn’t happen until he acends into the clouds (about 40 days from today) in front of his disciples after telling them he will one day return.

Along those lines, I attended a new "progressive" church

Apr 17, 2022, 6:49 PM

ONCE, here in town when it first opened. The "stage" (and it was just that, no pulpit) had a full on rock band instrument setup, drums, guitars, amplifiers, microphones. It turned out to be more of a rock concert than a religious service. Ultimately, at least it seemed that way to me, once I got over the shock, that there was very little religion involved in it. It was more along the line from the movie "Gladiator", "Are you not Entertained?"

I am sure there is a place for this type of church, they have a whole lot of people in attendance each Sunday, it appears. I hope and pray they are bringing a lot of souls to Christ. That type of service just wasn't for me. I am very happy attending my 200+ year old, small, traditional church out in the country. To each, his own.

Apr 17, 2022, 7:04 PM [ in reply to Along those lines, I attended a new "progressive" church ]

ago. Like most of this type, I think, it began with about 30-45 minutes of "Christian rock" music, then the preacher came out and preached for almost an hour and half! A very dynamic speaker! He was actually able to keep most everyone's attention, but I prefer 15-20 minutes, at most! He did take a break midway of the sermon, where he got on the band's organ, and played and sang a real bluesy gospel song!

The service then ended with a rather lengthy prayer, and there was absolutely no audience participation at all! Not really my cup of tea, but if that's what it takes to get some people in church, then more power to them!

Imagine about 2000 years ago when the first Christians would walk for miles and sometimes days to go to church to learn about and worship our Lord and Savior. How pissed would you be if it only lasted about 20-25 minutes.

I would suggest the #1 is closer to being Biblically correct - The good book talks about Jesus Ascending, which is certainly what he'll be doing when the takes off in the helicopter - bonus points for the apostles creed with "descended into he !!" (it could be argued that the mega church is actually hades in disguise)

I would also argue that there are prohibitions in Levitical law in regards to mounting animals, so riding the bunny isn't even close.

He is risen, the world is being renewed and we are being renewed with it. Blessings to you all. Go Tigers.

I think neither. To associate Jesus Christ with an Easter Bunny

Apr 17, 2022, 8:24 PM

is in no way scriptural.

However, our church had an Easter Egg Hunt for all the young people on Saturday. I used the opportunity to point them to the Lamb instead of the Bunny. No, we didn’t tell them that there is not really an Easter Bunny but instead pointed them to Calvary, the cross and our resurrected Lord! He’s alive!

If we don’t make a place for our young people to have fun, the world already has one in place! It’s our job as Pastors to get them to the church as often as we can.

And btw, Sunrise Service was @ 7:00 am, Breakfast @8:00 am and an Easter Worship @ 10:45 am. Pointing souls to Calvary!

Seacoast in Mt Plesant

Apr 18, 2022, 8:36 AM

I grew up in a conservative, country, Baptist church. Went to Seacoast for the first time about 4 years ago. It is full blown rock concert for the first 15 minutes. Then an “entertaining” but very Christian message that always has things that the congregation can relate to.
I still like my Baptist church, but very much enjoy and value Seacoast type services as well.

Our church is in poor community. We offered helicopter dropping eggs, free food, bounce houses, antique car show, face painting, petting zoo. Weather prevented the drop but there was an egg hunt. All we wanted to do was welcome our community to church. 80% Pickens County is not attending church. So 1000 folks showed up - and found out church loves people-think that was what He said - love others as I have loved you. People need Christ.
