Growing up near Clemson / memories of the businesses

Apr 29, 2022, 12:11 PM

I grew up in in the Wildhog community (went to Pendleton Highschool) and graduated highschool in 2003. Back then Clemson didn't have nearly the retail stores and dining options it does now. We went to Anderson for pretty much everything we needed and Clemson WAS the University. The only time we went to Clemson was for something associated with the University.

Well, once my older brother got his license that all changed. Clemson was a magical place with people from all over and a scene that was nowhere to be found in Pendleton/Anderson and my brother would let me bum along when he went there. I bought my Cd's and posters at Rainbow Records, found any excuse to go the White Rabbit (usually incense but also my first glass piece), went to the dollar theatre, and hung out around downtown on the weekends wishing I could get in the bars. It was awesome. I love thinking back on those memories of what Clemson was to me before becoming a student.

2003 !?!?!?

Kid...you should have seen it back in the early 70's through the late 80's.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Right!!! I wish I had seen and experienced it then. I guess the main point of my post was that the Clemson of my childhood/highschool memories is very different than even the Clemson I went to.

To me, the last vestiges of a dirtier / older Clemson were Nicks, Backstreets (still had super cheap liquour pitchers and pizza night), and Sloan Street taproom, and The Joint. Athens maintained a lot of it's "wierdness" but Clemson has been a bit scrubbed.

Really. The early 80’s were the best. TTT then take in the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night. Pick up a Chanelo’s pizza and head back to Johnston. Cold pizza for breakfast on Sunday morning.

Everyone shoulda been there in the Late 50s-Early 60s ...

Clemson was “Clemson” back then.

The Bookstore was my favorite bar until it closed. I then moved to Sloan Streets and TTT. The boiled peanuts at Sloans Streets were the best in Clemson.

Anybody Remember the Tiger Den on 123?

Apr 30, 2022, 4:28 PM

You'd get there at 3:30 to get a seat in front of the beer tap. At 4:00 it was as much FREE BEER as you could until 5:00.
Aaahhh the good ole days...

experienced anymore. There were about six of us from my little high school who all went to Clemson together in 1972. That first Friday night on campus, we trooped down to the original "Study Hall" bar / restaurant, and got us an upstairs table.

Very soon the table was complete with pitchers of beer, and big ol' "greasy cheese" pepperoni pizzas. It was our official "We are COLLEGE MEN now" moment. Just one of the first of many great Clemson memories.

except, I grew up in Clemson and it was the Red Carpet & Lester's for me. I always say it was a Great place to grow up but maybe not the best to raise children. Great times and memories!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, we spent some quality time at the Red Carpet Lounge

Apr 30, 2022, 12:33 PM

as well. About the only thing I remember about it is that, if you showed up late enough on a football Saturday night (all games started ~1 pm back then, no lights at the Valley), there was one female cheerleader you could always count on being passed out drunk in a corner there.

If she didn't "grow up" to be an alcoholic, she missed a dang good starting point.

My favorite hangout was the Red Carpet Lounge. Memories of the barmaid that we called Betty Braless for obvious reasons.

Didn’t the Red Carpet have a lunch buffet in early 70s?

Re: Crazy Zack's Friday...$1 entry and .05 draft

There was a lunch line in the front that served food up to about 5pm. the back was divided by a curtain that was pulled back when the front stopped serving food. The study hall was a regular bar downstairs and the upstairs served for sit down eating. Mr. Knickerbockers was divided into two stores; one for men's formal wear and the other for women's attire. That changed after 1969-1970 school year. Scotties served the same type of canned beer for 5 cents less per can. It was just a longer walk out to 123.
The only fast food place around was Hardee's, across from Fike Field House.

Grew up in Greenville and the wife and I are hoping to get somewhere close to Clemson in the next few years. Employment is my hold up.

In my biased opinion, 1979-1984 was ideal. Good academics. Good people, good partying, good extracurriculars, good football, good ACC basketball (when Jordan/Bias/Sampson/Worthy/etc. played 3 years, good music, no chain to digital electronics. A lot of happiness abounding through the town and foothills!

In the 1972-76 era, there was a converted grocery store

Apr 30, 2022, 12:38 PM

turned bar, named, shockingly, The Grocery. I remember seeing the group "Mother's Finest" play there one time. The only thing I really recall about it was they had a black female lead singer who came out wearing a miniskirt, and a wide belt with a big red belt buckle that had one single word on it. "HOT". It was, and she was. Good Times.

:)

I think Mother's Finest still performs in some configuration***
