I think I only saw 2 or 3 negatives things the entire game

Sep 3, 2017, 2:17 PM

That's amazing for an opener no matter the opponent.

1. 2 minute offense at the end of half wasn't too good. I blame the coaches for that more than Kelly. They should have called a time out after the short completion in the middle of the field. Instead they tried to run another play and too much time ran off the clock. I'm sure the coaches will take ownership of that and get it fixed in the future.

2. It was refreshing to see a booming kick from Spiers. I don't think Teasdall had 50ish yd kick without a roll all year last year. However, Spiers needs to speed up his kicking delivery. It was a pretty slow IMO and some other posters recognized it during the game as well. Teams will definitely take note of that on tape and will come after us in the kicking game.

3. DE depth is still very much a question mark. Bryant and Ferrell looked solid, but I didn't see much out of Logan, Register, or Kelly. It was Logan and Kelly's first game so they deserve a pass. Register's fine if teams try to run right at us, but he doesn't offer much resistance vs athletic QBs or on perimeter runs that come to his side since he doesn't move real well. Wilkins is always the ace up our sleeve, but hopefully Logan and Kelly can progress so we can keep Christian at DT.

All in all though, there isn't much to complain about this game. Kudos to the Batson, the players and coaches for the work they did in the off season and fall camp.

I do as well but they are different. 1. Was Lamar I thought both Davis and smith played not just better but significantly better at mike. Lamar hit the wrong gap multiple times and couldn't shed blocks. Seemed slow to react. Davis 33 played extremely well, watch the film and pay close attention mike the whole game.

2. Lack of push from backup DTs, and where is Huggins? He is a junior now but we saw both Pinckney and Johnson off the bench first, and Robinson didn't even play, suggesting Huggins is our 6th dt. Everyone talking about DE depth I'm actually worried about backup DTs holding the line of scrimmage and getting push.

3. Punt return, I still don't like ray ray back there and believe the coaches are being stubborn on this. He is NOT natural fielding the ball and it is obvious. Note I said FIELDING the ball, I'm not talking about the return skill. Rodgers looked much more natural and I would give him that job and end for once and all the ray ray punt return fiasco that should have ended a year ago.

Robinson was suspended for Game 1. Maybe Huggins has an injury. He looked just fine versus Ohio St.

Huggins played yesterday, so not injured.***

yeah, our coaches just really don't want the best person back there..... they just like Ray Ray better...... everyone knows that Rogers is better but the coaches are just stubborn...... gee whiz, do you actually believe what you posted and that our coaches aren't going to put the best people in each position.....?

The original post was about the few things we are concerned about so I gave mine. If you wanted the laundry list of the hundreds of things we are happy with this obviously wasn't the thread for you.

trutiger: I agree with you re the pint returning. Amari will bust one (at least) for the distance.

Point noted on the backup DTs

That's why I don't want Wilkins moved to DE. I'd rather be strong in the middle even if it means I'm a little weaker at DE. I think what we'll see in the future is that Robinson and Pickney will be 3rd and 4th man in the DT rotation on early downs, but Huggins will be the guy that comes in ahead of Nyles more on passing downs. Huggins' strength since he's been here has always been in rushing the passer. He just isn't as good at stopping the run (often he plays too high and his amazing brute strength gets nullified). A lot of that may be do to the fact that he's a converted DE that out grew the position. Knowing Huggins strength is pass rushing, he's not going to show his worth vs a team that's only going to throw the ball 4 or 5 times over the course of an entire game like KSU. However, you would have liked for him to have shown bigger strides in defending the run though.

It appeared they worked on fundamentals extensively. The only other team I saw with that development was Bama.

I am anxious to see the progression of all the DBs against a passing team. We have all heard about the boxing gloves and fundamental work there. I know the few times Kent St did pass our DBs were all over their WRs without touching them. Looked much improved. Again, I'm anxious to see if this continues against a team with better skills and with more repetitions in a single game.

At the end of the 1st half I saw no problem with the last pass play. When the receiver caught the ball he had the 1st down, but instead of taking knee he tried to run out of bounds. Maybe I'm wrong, since I didn't keep my eye on the clock, but I thought there was enough time left for a rushed field goal.

You are spot on with the concern over Register, very slow at best. Nothing yesterday to remotely test my biggest concern on defense. I am concerned about Van Smith being fast enough on the back end.

There were significantly fewer negatives than any opener

Sep 3, 2017, 3:43 PM

I can remember. That's what I took away from yesterday.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you said, or anybody else for that matter. I'm sure our coaches are all over that stuff. For me, as a fan, all of that was overshadowed by the smoothest, most complete opening game I can remember. I understand that KS is no measuring stick, and the next two weeks will be exponentially more difficult; but yesterday we were prepared and ready, and I think executed everything much better than I expected. It was just what we needed in an opener.

and you're right, clock management needs some work.
