Somebody mentioned liking Westerns in here the other day

I've watched 3 recently, 2 of which were pretty good.
"Old Henry" was excellent. Probably should have caught the twist earlier, but I'm kind of movie dense sometimes and missed it. I think its a new release. It was new to me, anyway.
"1922" was kind of a western, but is a Stephen King s cript. Not as good as "Old Henry", but it was aight. Its a few years old I think.
"The Harder They Fall". It had a good cast, but somewhere it just went all wrong. I think the writers were too hung up and relied on the all black cast thing, and I couldn't make it all the way through. Seems a shame--they were almost there. I thought the actors played their characters great--just the story went stupid and lost my interest.
I didn't count Tombstone, which is prob the grandaddy of "recent' Westerns. I watch piece parts of that every time it's on.
Now where is deweather to tell me how wrong I am?

Pretty standard for a western. Predictable, not super creative. Wouldn’t recommend. I watch most of the new ones because they’re filmed in NM.

The John Wayne True Grit was on last night. Hadn't seen it in forever. Two things jarred me from how I remembered it...good god the dialogue was stiff, and good god the cinematography was through the roof.
The outlaw cabin where Dennis Hopper "done got stabbed in the gut by his partner"
Hot Creek, Mono County, California
Where "Ole Bo" bit the dust in the shootout with Ned Pepper's Gang
Owl Creek Pass, Colorado

I’ve seen a lot of “el Diablo Canyon” in westerns lately. It’s a canyon about 15 miles outside of Santa Fe.

fulfilling. But I guess at some point, Henry had to end up dying as he lived.

Haven't seen "Old Henry"...

but I've heard good things and will check it out when it makes it to a streaming service.
"1922" isn't really a western (like you basically said) as much as a horror movie set in the depression era and I agree it's decent. It's no Gerald's Game (by Mike Flanagan) in terms of Netflix Stephen King adaptations go, but it was a decent watch as I remember it.
I really liked "The Harder They Fall" as a visual spectacle of a western. The cast is great but I agree the story is pretty simple. It's a typical revenge tale, and it's pretty standard Western genre storytelling. However, the visuals are fantastic (especially one particular shot at the end of the movie with Elba's character posed like he's in a painting) and the energy and style of the movie won me over. I highly recommend it if you like Westerns and Tarantino-style dialogue and attitude.
A few other Westerns I'd recommend off the top of my head are "Hostiles," "3:10 to Yuma," "Sisters Brothers," and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

I'm a bit Western nut. 1922 is on the docket. I watched The Harder They Fall, and while it checked a lot of pleasurable Western tropes along with some solid ### cinematography, it did seem a little too hung at winking at itself from a cultural perspective. Idris Elba was a great bad guy, but I'm not sure I really liked or bought the final confrontation between him and the protagonist. Also didn't seem believable what Elba does in the end given his character.

Curious as to what was unbelievable about what Elba does?

or what didn't work for you at the end? I really liked the end confrontation as giving the movie some emotional stakes beyond the typical "revenge!" storyline. It was a satisfying "duel" without using guns up until a singular moment which ended the duel. That's the part I actually had some issues with was once Elba lays everything out, our hero actually "loses" with the decision he makes and I can see some arguing that his "Han Solo"-type bad guy goes too far at that moment (more Kylo Ren if I'm going to force a Star Wars metaphor) and the movie ends on a sour note. But, I liked that little bit of complexity in an otherwise simplistic story.
The cinematography was fantastic and the use of color was awesome. When they go to the "white town" and it's literally almost devoid of all color (to contrast with the very vibrantly colored "black town") I chuckled. That is almost going too far with the metaphor/symbolism but I do think it was supposed to be funny so I didn't ding the movie for that.
This was the first real movie by the director, I believe, and man, I can't wait to see what he does next. He has a real eye for scene staging (that shot of Idris Elba at the end sitting next to the window was a "wow!" moment from me).

Trudy is not dead!
I enjoyed the movie and I didn't know if I should pull for the good guys/gals or the bad ones.
On a side note I wouldn't be surprised if Idris is the next 007.

he could be bond for one or two films but he's only 4 years younger than Daniel Craig.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
And don't disagree with this as the intent... But it just didn't seem to fit with the character. He was ambitious, ruthless, and wanted the world. He had his brother there, torturing him and demanding the money. He knew who he was the whole time. But then, when faced with a one-on-one in which he had the clear advantage, he wants some deep "send my brother to the dark side" moment and end his own life?
I don't think the twist was set up well.
If he wanted his brother to be him so badly, he would have taken him at the beginning of the movie and groomed him.
But I agree with you on the visuals; stunning with powerful cinematography. And some superb acting performances. Really loved the guy who played Cherokee Bill.

He has range and tons of charisma. His "Lord of the Rings"-esque (witch king) death was cool even if I thought it was a bit telegraphed.
I see what you're saying and I think that's a fair conclusion to make with that scene. I can see how it could have felt forced or unearned, but for me, I think Elba understood where he was at that moment. He had lost. He had no more ambitions left because all that he had built was gone now that his half-brother had killed all his men and taken the town. This was his last resort to "win" the duel. That's why I didn't like that our hero kills him. Our hero actually loses (similar to the ending of Se7en) even if the epilogue at the end seems to suggest a happier ending, so I'm not 100% sold that my interpretation is right.
