New Story: Spring questions on defense: Can Muse be a star? How does LB shake out?

Spring questions on defense: Can Muse be a star? How does LB shake out?

It seems like defensive coordinator Brent Venables has faced an uphill battle every year he’s been on campus, having to replace most of his defense each year. That isn’t the case in 2017 Full Story »

Wouldn't be surprised if Muse has a break out season. His HS tape was impressive and I've always been big on Tanner, I can see the potential in him. It jumps out at you! Dude is strong and has very good speed. Ready to see him ball out this season

109 snaps, 24 tackles- not bad at all. And Tanner had a pick six as well as a partially blocked punt against 'Bama. Looks like a real good player.

Yes, Muse had that impressive pick 6, blocked a punt, and

made several impressive stops. I think he definitely has the making of being a star.

I'm also interested to see how the LB situation plays out this spring... and Tanner Muse is going to be a fn stud, he already is. Playing only 109 snaps but finishing 13th in tackling on last year's defense is noteworthy. And let's not forget the blocked kick, batted down pass or 64 yard pick-six! Huge Tanner Muse fan. I hope he shows out this spring!

The open Safety spot won't come down to just talent.

Feb 16, 2017, 12:09 PM

The guy who seems to be able to know his assignment and not break discipline will be the one who ends up with the Lions share of snaps. I think Tanner Muse seemed to keep his position better than Van from what I watched.

I have a theory that Safeties that come from HS teams that play an option offense often are better disciplined than safeties that don't see as much deception in practice each day.

I think Wilkins moves back to DT but also plays some DE when

Muse i had the honor of coaching him in baseball back home. He is gonna do great. Excited he landed at the school I follow and cheer for.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very Cool! Question for you though

Feb 16, 2017, 2:14 PM

Curious about your thoughts since you coached him. Most people seemed to ink his ceiling was much higher as a baseball player. I thought his football film was very impressive and, like everyone else on here, I have been very impressed with his play as a Tiger so far. Do you think he is a better baseball talent than football?

The best man will win the job, Simmons is a big body as well. Just have to see how is coverage skills are. I expect to see Tre Lamar get plenty of PT this year too. The D-line will still be nasty! I expect Bryant, Wilkins, Dex, Ferrell to be the starting 4, Wilkins can rotate to DE when needed. That middle would be the best in the nation with big Dex and Wilkins in it....good grief.

If our CB/S positions play well early we will be very strong up front . I think Smith and Lamar are going to be grown-men come time for the opener ...and I see great difficulty for our opposition when trying to move the football.

So dang excited reading through this thread. We have talent on talent on talent.

Wow have we came a long way in a short period of time!!

Big fan of muse here too!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we have the most talented LBs this year

Feb 16, 2017, 6:02 PM

Than in years past.i think we'll see a lot more rotation this upcoming season as it seemed as though Boulware, Joseph and Odaniel were playing almost every single snap. Only thing that concerns me is the secondary but I think the addition of Mickey Conn will help us alot

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only thing on D I'm worried about is DE. All the DB's will

Feb 16, 2017, 6:50 PM

be good. Our DE play was sub par last year. If we fix that we may have the best defense Clemson has ever had. We are VERY deep at LB next year. Big and fast is becoming a theme for our team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think DE will be a strength.*****

I happen to agree with you on that. Both of Scarborough's TDs in the NCG were due to the DE's rushing too deep and allowing him to cut inside them. It was Cle Ferrel both times.

Sorry to disagree, but that is what you want the DE to do, turn it up inside where the LBs and secondary are supposed to be there to make the play. It's when they get OUTSIDE the ends is when problems start.

Wait, what? Our DE play was subpar???? Ahhhh, you must have been watching all the USUCK games. Ferrell became a star, and Wilkins more than played well. Bryant came on after his injury and Yeargin figured in on a LOT of good plays. Yeah, not sure what games you were watching.

Maybe YOU were watching USCjr games but not me. Either that or this was your first season watching Clemson on defense.

2011 Branch #8 with 11
2012 Beasley #37 with 8
2013 Beasley #3 with 13
2014 Beasley #7 with 12
2015 Lawson #3 with 13, Dodd #5 with 12
2016 Ferrell #84 with 6.

In 2016 we had a HUGE drop in DE production. Our DT's Watkins (11) and Lawrence (7) did well but that's not where our defense usually gets its production. If you want proof of our DE struggles ask one of the best DT's in the country Wilkins how many snaps he played at DE. You don't play a DT at DE when you have elite pass rushing DE's. We simply didn't have that last year.

Stop calling people coots when you don't know what you're talking about
