In light of all the uproar over renaming Tillman Hall.......

many on the "fizzling coot forum" are continually posting negative comments about Clemson and our "racist past". Correct me if I am wrong, but no graduate of Clemson University ever fought for the Confederacy, whereas I am sure many graduates of USuC did.

I always like to remind them that there's a tiny building behind the President's House on the Horseshoe that was once slave quarters. It's pretty stupid for any Southern school to sling mud when it comes to racism.

naming rights. I really like the sound of Jiffy-Lube Hall, or maybe even KFC Hall. Taco Bell is one of my favorite fast food places. Maybe they could buy the rights and name it Fourth-Meal Hall.

Fighting for the Confederacy did not in and of itsself equate to racism. The American Civil War was "A rich mans battle and a poor man's fight." Very few of the Southern Soldiers owned slaves. The truth is that most soldiers who wore Blue and most soldiers who wore Gray were racists. The war in the North was to "preserve the Union" and in fact preserve the industrial machine that drove the Union states. The war in the South was about "States rights." The driving force behind the war was tarriffs, the North's need for the South's raw products, and The Souths desire to sell our products to Europe. Lets keep history accurate and leave out the P.C. nonsense. Lincoln ran on abolition. Lincoln did not want the slaves simply freed, he wanted them repatriated to Africa. The Union army became almost entirely conscripted after the Emancipation Proclamation. The men attempted in mass to leave the army and their cry was "we aint fighting to free Ni..ers." The Union army was just as racist as the Confederate army. Money was the driving force behind The American Civil War.

States rights to own slaves. States rights to sell their commodities to whom they wanted to sell them to. The war only became about slavery to keep Europe from giving military aid to the South.
