NIT isn't easy to qualify for as years ago. All teams that win their regular season conference but lose in the tournament automatically receive bids to the NIT. Might be a little over 20 teams as at large teams. Right now Clemson is projected as a 7th seed see the bottom of link. So if a few top teams lose in their tournament, they are out:

Now that Tyson is out, even the NIT may be a stretch. It is hard to win in basketball and the ACC will be lucky to a measly 4 teams in the dance.
