TNET: The Kansas Pioneer: Venables keeps offensive coordinators up at night

The Kansas Pioneer: Venables keeps offensive coordinators up at night

Brent Venables was born in Salina, Kansas, a pioneering town on the edge of the Great American West, so it’s no wonder he’s a pioneer on the cutting edge of defensive football. Full Story »

I believe Brent is a reason our offense has became so efficient. He has to sit on meeting with Jeff and Tony and say this is how I would stop you there and it makes Jeff and Tony create disguises to make plays. I bet those meetings are a chess match of epic proportions.

He certainly makes opponents think, and so far, none of them have out-thought him. I'm just glad he's ours.

I cannot even imaging the brain stoppage that must have occurred in Mark Stoops' head to let BV leave their program, even if it were to help his brother. I love my brother, too, but when I have an obligation to do my best for my players and the university who hired me to give them my best, my brother better be the best choice. Mark Stoops' brother couldn't carry BV's jock strap. That's all there is to it, and it's for the world to see now. Wonder how many times, when it's all quiet, and there is nobody there except Mark Stoops, that he rues that stupid decision. What a blessing BV has been, and major kudos to Dabo for seeing the opportunity to help BV be what he is - the best Defensive Coordinator in the business. Lord, help me, I do love it so!

Classic moments, and poetic justice that their decision sucked, and ours was OUTSTANDING. Hate to use the graphic verb, but it's hard to describe their decision any other way, and I always liked and still have a lot of respect for Mark Stoops. He just made a decision from the heart and not the brain. That said, I am delighted that he chose family over duty to his job and his university. His loss, our gain! BV was as big a gift as our getting Dabo in place of TB.

A couple of three things about this article and DCBV

Oct 29, 2019, 8:51 AM

What a GREAT pic of Venables - in that he just epitomizes the intensity of hard nosed, defensive football with that look frozen in time.

As for the three man front, was it a (r)evolutionary idea or strategy; or merely a move forced by not having enough depth at DT to play a four man front. Elliot’s comment leads me to believe he thinks it may be the former.

Lastly, do you think Oklahoma fans have forgotten - and forgiven - Stoops for choosing his son (oops! Thanks for the corrections below - it was his brother...) over Brent Venables? Personally, I love seeing favoritism, nepotism and privilege blow up in the face and fail miserably, if at all possible, when a good and deserving person is slighted in that way.

REALLY GLAD to be watching Venables work his magic on OUR sideline!

GO TIGERS!!!

Message was edited by: Uncle Bill® who HAS slept since that OU coaching change by Stoops, and the 3 man DL is debatable, but I AM right about that pic!

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

It has been a kind of an "in your face" demonstration to them that they chose poorly. We, on the other hand, struck it rich by getting him in place of the village idiot we had who now is on about his 5th job since leaving us.

I agree the 3 man front is more out of necessity than design but he has found a way to make it effective. As for Stoops, its was his brother and not his son. Mike Stoops was plenty qualified for the job and I think Brent was going to be Co-Coordinator still but cant blame Stoops for hiring his brother...who was already pretty good coach. Although, the other brother Mark did not hire his brother Mike after last season when he had an opening and Mike was unemployed. Maybe younger brother Mark learned from watching his older brother botch that decision.

3 man front is not necessity.... often we try to put our best 11 on the field at the same time.
There were more 4 man fronts against BC....

Oh wow Uncle Bill, you and I see some things just alike, especially when a deserving person has been slighted, bc I to love seeing the world around the person that is doing the slighting to crash and burn when they have slighted another in favor of a friend or family member when there was someone within better suited for the job that had worked their butt off for the position, and that is exactly what happened to big brother Stoops when he was willing to let BV leave in favor of little brother. But I am so glad that big brother did it, or we wouldn't have been enjoying the works of BV at Clemson.

I know that if something like that was to happen at Clemson, and Dabo or our administration had done something that caused BV to leave us, I would never forget or forgive the people that allowed it to happen. I know that I don't have all that much time left with the living, but if something like what happen at Oklahoma with BV, happen at Clemson, the rest of my life would be with tremendous disgust for who ever allowed something like that to happen and we lost BV bc of it!!!

I still contend the best thing to happen in Dabo building

Oct 29, 2019, 6:01 PM

this dynasty is Clemson getting waxed at the Orange Bowl by WV, Steele getting his bags packed and ultimately DCBV getting hired!

And haven't looked back since!

Go Tigers!

Oh but don't you remember the Tiger fans that were saying that we helped Oklahoma get rid of their problem that made it easy for little brother Stoops to come back in and take over the DC job bc Dabo help them to get rid of BV and brought him to Clemson!!!
