I should start a church...

Jun 29, 2017, 1:23 PM

One of the houses on my street is owned by a local church, as far as I could tell the minister lived there. Since it is church owned, obviously property taxes = 0.

Well now they have a sign in the front yard that the house is for rent and I see the price is almost 3 grand/month. I'm going to take a wild guess that they won't have to pay rental income tax and the property will continue to have no property taxes.

What is the least amount of work I could do to pass the test of being a church? Can I just say my house is the church?

I've been wanting to start a cult...errr church for awhile now. Makes sense to have a location close to Atlanta. A lot more money down that way to pilfer. We'll call it New Light Redemption or something like that. I honestly think I could write a book fairly quickly to base our beliefs off of.

Tax laws vary from state to state...

and are variously applied, but in order for a property to qualify for exemption it generally must be used for church purposes not simply be owned by a church.

Dude, my county takes years to pick up on teardowns

Jun 29, 2017, 1:43 PM

to where people's property contiunes to be be assessed for under 300k when they bought a tear down/new build for 800k, so I really doubt that the county is going to figure out the property is being rented out and not for church use.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's true of just about every county.

Jun 29, 2017, 1:51 PM

They work on very limited resources both in quality and quantity. I'm just saying that just because a property is owned by a church doesn't necessarily mean its exempt. We, our church, just went through a lot of hard ache after acquiring a property here and didn't apply for exemption and, bam! The locals not only assessed tax but slapped on a $5,000 a month penalty that added up as long as the issue was under appeal.

I pulled up property records, they haven't been paying

Jun 29, 2017, 2:24 PM

Which makes sense considering the minister lived there (I believe...I actually have no idea), so 2018 will be the true test but I'm 99% sure it will still be zero.

I understand counties have limited resources and people doing additions to their house are hard to pick up, but I would have to think it would be easy for them to run a list of new home purchase prices and compare to the old assessed values, especially when it's 500k apart in value

if it is being used commercially, it should be reported***
