The Coach was nothing but respectful! Why do you have to act so cocky? You are not on the team!
Dabo and his coaches and players do not have your attitude!

teams like Troy or App State. If we are unprepared and play lack luster we will look like Tennessee or even might lose the game. IT has happened before and will happen again.

I am not saying it is going to happen but I think this ball game will be 30-21 or something like that. AND you know what? That is o'kay unless we lose. We will be 2-0 at the end of the game.

GO Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and it got ugly fast, and stayed ugly on the scoreboard at the end.

Stay focused and prepared!

On the other hand, I have seen Tiger teams who could not

Sep 7, 2016, 2:21 PM

wait to get out there and just kill teams like Citadel 58-3 or Long Beach State 59-6. If you look at historical scores though most openers against non P5 at Clemson since 1978 are like 24-13, 27-12, or 34-13.

I dunno . . .

Sep 8, 2016, 1:02 AM

There are plenty of but kickings that Clemson gave in openers to small-time teams in that span. The moderate scores you mention as characteristic were usually not the case when it was a strong Clemson team. Maybe some mediocre Clemson teams had underwhelming scores, but not the good ones. Most of the good ones usually took care of smaller programs by substantial margins. I remember us beating App State 23-12 in the 90's, and Furman 28-17 a few years ago. And there were a couple of moderate margins against I-AA schools in the late 70's and in 1980. But those were the exceptions. The 40-7 and 44-10 and 33-0, and 48-3 type scores were more the norm.

They also went undefeated that year and finished in the top 10, can't really compare that Marshall team to Troy yet

Re: I remember in the '90's, Marshall coming to DV...

Sep 7, 2016, 2:32 PM

I was at that game, the score was never ugly, a tight game they won 13-10. They were the better team that year. Of course it helped they had Pennington & Moss. They beat the coots the following year 24-21. I was also at that game.

Think Troy shows up - but see us pulling away fairly easily. Offense will have something to prove after lackluster performance in the plains. See it around a 41-17 game.

They also had Chad Pennington at QB who went on to the NFL. And our talent level wasn't as deep as it is now. We'll be fine.

I was at that Marshall game. It wasn't an upset.

Sep 7, 2016, 3:48 PM [ in reply to I remember in the '90's, Marshall coming to DV... ]

Marshall had already made the jump from I-AA* to I-A a few years prior to that meeting in 1999. That Marshall team had Chad Pennington at quarterback & Randy Moss at wide receiver. It was actually an exciting game. The Thundering Herd scored late to win the game 13-10, & went on to finish their season undefeated. The Tigers under 1st-year coach Tommy Bowden finished 6-6, beating South Carolina & losing to Mississippi State in the Peach Bowl. Our team actually played fairly well in that game; it certainly wasn't a case of taking a supposedly "lesser" opponent lightly.

* To my knowledge, Clemson has not yet lost to a I-AA/FCS team since Division I was split in 1978.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No Randy Moss.

Sep 7, 2016, 3:57 PM

He went to the Vikings in '98.

They didn't go undefeated and moss was not on the team

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They did go undefeated. They did not have Moss.

Sep 7, 2016, 11:10 PM

There were 4 players from that team drafted. Pennington was a Heisman finalist who had a successful NFL career and was drafted in the first round.

30-21? The point spread is currently 36 with a 63.5 over/under. We should win somewhere in the neighborhood of 49-14. If we don't blow them out there is reason for concern. This is a game you need to build depth, not to sweat it out until the end.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

JMO but based on other opening games in DV including Dabo

Sep 7, 2016, 3:28 PM

era. It is possible we blow them out but I think we are real vanilla, use lots of frosh and backups to get them into a game situation, and that there will not be a whole lot of scoring like some of you think. I would rather be able to build depth with our youth then run-up the score on Troy and SC State. Louisville and FSU await.

Re: JMO but based on other opening games in DV including Dabo

Sep 7, 2016, 3:31 PM

What you said doesn't make any sense. Dabo isn't going to play a bunch of freshmen if the outcome is in doubt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like I said JMO. The game would not be in doubt to end 30-21

Sep 7, 2016, 3:36 PM

but with 2nd and 3rd string D in they could give up scores as game comes to conclusion.

I will give you 35-41 points for Clemson to 17-24 points for Troy if that makes you feel better.

I think Clemson will score at least 49 points and Troy will score 17. We have to continue to past the Eye Test until the Real Poll comes out.

I don't bet, but

Troy and 34 points seems like a LOCK.

In 2011 we won by 24 points.

YES - we are better, but so are they.

If we don't have this game put away by half, then our coaches are not doing a good job.
The Tigers 2nd team is more talented than this bunch, because they are playing at Troy.
This game will be a sleeper and a glorified scrimmage the whole second half.

Re: Guys, I will say this....

We need to stay focused on the game and hopefully provide some more playing time for our second teamers.

It's better that they believe they can win...

Sep 7, 2016, 7:02 PM

Too many times a team that thinks they have no chance will just try to hurt someone(especially a star player). Troy may be a classier program than that, I don't know. But a team that is focused on competing will take a lot fewer cheap shots.
