Oregon, Oregon State drop 'Civil War' from rivalry

Oregon and Oregon State will no longer refer to their rivalry as the "Civil War" because of the term's link to racism."Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery," Oregon State president Edward J. Ray stated. "While not intended as (a) reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history."In recent years, some students, faculty, alumni, student-athletes, OSU stakeholders, and community members have questioned the appropriateness of this term. That we did not act before to change the name was a mistake. We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all and in recognition that Black Lives Matter."The Oregon-Oregon State rivalry was first labeled the "Civil War" in the 1930s and was used to promote athletic contests between the two schools."Today's announcement is not only right, but is a long time coming, and I wish to thank former Duck great Dennis Dixon for raising the question and being the catalyst for change," said Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens. "Thanks also to our current student-athletes for their leadership and input during this process. We must all recognize the power of words and the symbolism associated with the Civil War."One of the oldest rivalries in the NCAA, Oregon and Oregon State have faced each other 123 times in football and 354 times in men's basketball.

I guess people from Oregon didn't get the news that Southerners refer to the war as the War Between the States and not the Civil War.

I have tried to make that point too because I totally agree with you Lakedude. I was called a ignorant person by a black friend telling me I don’t know what it’s like to be black.

I tried to explain to him that at some point in time most every race has endured some form of being enslaved and oppressed. He did not want to hear that. He is looking at the current problems with blinders on blaming only white people.

I even told him I have done hours of research. From this I found that the first slave owners in the Colonies were blacks who owned blacks. Then I ask him what he thought about the problem with black on black crime. All he could focus on was white racism.

When I suggested violence would not solve the problems that open communication was needed He disagreed again saying I did not understand black peoples problems. Then I told him this is why honest communication is crucial to making a better future for all of us. I told him over the years that life for black people has gotten much better, pointing out how many more opportunities blacks have now than 60 years ago. He replied I was ignorant because what I was saying was not true. Blacks lives we worse now than ever.

Fact is there will always be racism in the world but IMO for the most part people want to get along.
