Second "Silence of the Lambs"! I remember I was living in an apartment alone at the time. Came home from the theater late at night and had a long walk from parking lot to my apartment. No one in sight. It was a creepy feeling windy night and I kept looking behind my back on the walk. I think I even looked in a closet or two when I got inside. lol. Never has a movie or anything else for that matter done that to me.

The Descent ...

5

Jun 1, 2023, 8:22 AM

but only the first 30 minutes or so. When one of the spelunkers get trapped in an opening they were crawling through, and they struggled to get her out, I, literally, had a panic attack. My claustrophobia kicked in, and I had to turn it off. I finally mustered the nerve to finish watching. The movie was extremely hokey after that scene.

The only other one I can remember being extremely uncomfortable watching was Joker.

As great as Ledger was I see the disconnect in that world and the world of a protagonist that Lecter or Fleck become and why they some how have you "liking" them.

Went to see one of these with girlfriend in while in college. The theater gave you a certificate if you could stay through entire movie. Needless to say, she didn't make it through to the end and literally was throwing up. The part that put her over the edge was when the asian kid got to pick out which puppy he wanted for dinner and it showed the mother butchering the pup alive. I have to admit I was ready for it to be over before that part but our friends wanted that certificate. It was definitely disturbing.

Assuming you mean the ‘80s John Carpenter remake, this is one of my absolute favorite movies. I saw the original not too long ago and it is nowhere near that good. I never found the movie particularly disturbing, but could see it being so at 10. It is such a thinking horror movie, wondering who is human and who is cloned. I always wished John Carpenter would do a remake as the special effects have grown a bit tired. There is a prequel out there now, but it is not at the same level.

Several. The Exorcist, A Clockwork Orange, and the original

2

Jun 1, 2023, 10:34 AM

Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The original Exorcist film is the first and ONLY movie I ever watched in a theater where the entire THEATER full of people was scared chitless.

A Clockwork Orange was just disturbing, on a whole lot of levels. I can never think of Dear Old Ludwig Von the same way ever again, after seeing that movie.

And, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the epitome of a slasher movie, made all the more evil by it SUPPOSEDLY being based on a real event. I say supposedly, because subsequent research showed that Hollywood invented about 90% of it.

JAWS gets an Honorable Mention for the sequence when that head fell out of the sunken boat. A whole row of women who had sat on the FRONT ROW of the theater, jumped up and left when that happened. They did not return at any point for the rest of the film. Wonder what they expected?

"American History X" with Ed Norton. It was a great movie, but the subject matter was very visceral with several tough moments to sit through (I can still hear teeth on concrete). It was a difficult, worthwhile watch.

The fourth kind. It scared me pretty good.

I don’t find that many movies very scary now and some of the ones I thought were scary as a kid are just corny and dumb. At the time though, Halloween was really scary to me. Even now when I hear that music it just sounds so eeery to me. The theme from the Exorcist is also so scary sounding. My other scary movie was the silence of the lambs. Very disturbing

I was an adult seeing Blair Witch. I think any time I see a movie where you never see the antagonist, it messes with my mind.

I remember watching the Fourth Kind but don't remember being too bothered by it.

My Dad took me to see Jaws when I was 11. My bed was "floating" in the ocean all night. That one traumatized A LOT of people when it was released.

And, The Amityville Horror (1979), my first R-rated movie at the tender age of 13. I, literally, slept in my parent's room that night. I was terrified.

Most of these movies are classics that are not even scary or disturbing. The most disturbing movie I have seen has got to be Hereditary. That movie gave me an uneasy feeling for a very long time. Midsommar is up there too.

Re: Really People?!

Jun 7, 2023, 10:09 AM

agreed, far too many mainstream movies that come out at theatres... looking for shock/terror, you have to dive deep into the genre but who really wants to find the most disturbing movie they can watch...
sounds a bit auto-erotic but then again aren't we all just a little bit???
I mean, a movie that has Johnny Depp play a heavily accident Canadian detective, Justin Long turned into an animal, and Michael Parks as a disturbed old soul all in 1...... utter disbelief

Had a stretch checking out some early 70's under the radar movies. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie together was a nice draw. Disturbing as #### and the closing scene is etched.

Eraserhead is also up there.
