Who will be the first to blow their car?

Nov 16, 2021, 10:49 AM

This is ridiculous.

I did it for a year

Nov 16, 2021, 10:54 AM

and actually had to pay for it.

Ask me anything.

How many times did you get someone else to do it for you?

Nov 16, 2021, 11:10 AM [ in reply to I did it for a year ]

How many times did you race to see when it would work and when it didn't?

TTT used to have a breathalyzer on the wall and that was the game--how we could max it out fastest, and then how high it would go.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you really cant get someone to do it for you

Nov 16, 2021, 11:21 AM

you have to learn how and its a pattern. Even if you did, 3 minutes into driving, you have the next prompt to blow again. So you cant get around it at all.

Even if you tried to have someone do it for you, it records every failed attempt. If you have enough failed attempts, you can lose your driving privledge.

One time my girlfriend and I went out and got all crazy. The next day I was supposed to drive to Charlotte. I wastn able to get my car started until 3pm that afternoon. That is how long the alcohol stuck around.

One time I ate a super ripe banana and then tried to drive to work, it failed. Had to take a cab.

The whole idea sucks.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:24 AM

I hope this thing breaks on every MADD lobbyist that pushed to get it included.

Soooo what you're saying is buy alot of stock in Uber.

Now!

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

can they stop people looking at their phone

Nov 16, 2021, 11:09 AM

from driving their car?

Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile,
Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!!

apparently not.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:11 AM

You'd think that would be pretty easy to do, too. Rather than eff up my car, they could just do it on the phone.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The technology exists.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:30 AM [ in reply to can they stop people looking at their phone ]

Legally they can’t force it, yet.

Though I’d accept it in a heart beat. Take my rights!!! (When it comes to texting and driving.)

and they suck, who ever owns a car with one will be dealing with that maintenance mess as long as they own the car.

"Hey can you fix the breathalyzer on my car?

Nope..parts are NLA"

And you know it will be made that if it's removed or bypassed, the car will just not run or something.

The car will be totaled over a breathalyzer.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And for those who say it won't ever break

Nov 16, 2021, 11:27 AM

GM, Ford and FCA will have to make these, too.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then, of course, we'll need to up our property taxes 500%

Nov 16, 2021, 11:43 AM [ in reply to 5 years after the first version goes into production ]

to pay for a new bus system because it's affecting low income rural quadriplegics who can't get to the food bank.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:32 AM

Run by morons and somebody will walk this back. Of course, they’ll probably double down and we’ll have another cash for clunkers on steroids to decimate the used car market to help push this ########.

most hardcore drunk drivers have 20 year old Hondas

Nov 16, 2021, 11:40 AM

they never can afford anything close to a new vehicle, so at best this won't have any affect at all for 20-25 years even if it does take effect on new vehicles in 2026.

So this won't even hit the main target group until 2050 or so.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think this about saving any lives

Nov 16, 2021, 11:58 AM

Our federal govt is the equivalent to a high maintenance chick we've let run all over us for 10 years. They're just making rules for the sake of making rules now, and to make you more miserable.

Nov 16, 2021, 11:39 AM

Don't mandate something for those that are innocent. If you get a DWI/DUI, THEN it should be mandatory to have this installed in your vehicle.

I'll agree it's problematic if breathalyzers are mandated

Nov 16, 2021, 4:29 PM

but from the article...

"the most likely system to prevent drunken driving is infrared cameras that monitor driver behavior. That technology is already being installed by automakers such as General Motors, BMW and Nissan to track driver attentiveness while using partially automated driver-assist systems.

The cameras make sure a driver is watching the road, and they look for signs of drowsiness, loss of consciousness or impairment.

If signs are spotted, the cars will warn the driver, and if the behavior persists, the car would turn on its hazard lights, slow down and pull to the side of the road.

Abuelsamid said breathalyzers aren’t a practical solution because many people would object to being forced to blow into a tube every time they get into the car. “I don’t think it’s going to go over very well with a lot of people,” he said."

To me, that's just an extension of the technology already in (new) cars so it seems similar to the mandating of rear cameras.

I like this because it takes into account a high tolerance
