About the half empty stadium

Sep 16, 2015, 11:28 PM

I watched the whole game against Wofford on TV and saw the empty stands, and I didn't like it, but it didn't really bother me too much. I have to say though, when I was AT the Appalachian State game and feeling that rush again in Death Valley, I got pretty upset about people leaving.

That is what I love about our stadium, no matter how many times you go, it NEVER gets old, it's always like the very first time again and again!!! How could you go and not stay until the final whistle??
GO TIGERS!! 38 - 13 tomorrow evening!

I've never left the stadium or turned a game off either.

Sep 16, 2015, 11:34 PM

Sometimes it's horrible but that's just me. I feel like if the boys and coaches are suffering I'll do my part to bear the burden. If they are celebrating I'll help.

Unless we stop scheduling cupcakes the crowd leaving to celebrate early will continue.

Definitely agree. The cutout of FCS opponents would fix the problem, and I love opening against UGA or Awbarn. Not sure I see that happening though.

I think we open next year with Auburn, but the games I have been to it doesn't matter cause people will leave to go outside no matter who we play.

Would love to see all Big conference teams play 11 games against other big conf teams

Sep 17, 2015, 9:38 AM [ in reply to Re: I've never left the stadium or turned a game off either. ]

I hope the NCAA gets more structured in the future so teams have more similar schedules. Would love to see 4 major conferences with 9 in conference games, every team have an out of conf rival, and a rotating 11th out of conf game against another major opponent. The 12th game schools can choose and Clemson and Scar can rotate through the smaller in state schools to keep them supported. No need to play two or more small schools in a year though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think if you paid for the ticket you can have two choices

Sep 17, 2015, 9:24 AM [ in reply to I've never left the stadium or turned a game off either. ]

To fill it with your own self, or to choose not to fill it. That is the beauty of our capitalistic system... money is still being made on my empty seat as much as my full seat. As a buyer, I feel like I should have the freedom to walk away and not feel bad about it.

There are tons of games I have stayed until the bitter end... and there are others where I felt the need to "stop the bleeding" as it were. I also change the channel in that circumstance.

For any Clemson fan who stayed to the bitter end in Miami after a 70-33 beat down at the Orange Bowl, he is a more patient man than I, but no better a Clemson fan in my opinion.

Some Clemson people have the belief that changing the channel or leaving the game denotes that you "don't care enough to support your team." I don't buy that. I care enough to donate to the university, to IPTAY, and to show up, but I don't care enough to watch games where I am not entertained... Clemson provides me entertainment. When watching Clemson becomes torturous, I will leave. Enough said.

People bring their children to the early games.

Sep 17, 2015, 5:09 AM

The stands were full at the beginning of the game. Many people bring their children to the early games and most can't make it through the whole game due to the heat, etc. They end up leaving at the half and don't come back in. It's good they have a chance to bring them to a game and get them started in the Clemson traditions early. The later and big games would not be good for the kids.

Email fanfeedback@clemson.edu and let them know you're not happy that more students than usual are leaving the games early this year.

So it's just students that leave when we're blowing out Wofford and App St. Gotcha.

Re: About the half empty stadium

I didn't say that. It's really disappointing, though, that the south upper deck student section was at about 25 percent capacity halfway through the second quarter. This panorama's from toward the end of the App State game. Notice every section but the two student sections on the left is more than half full and there's a handful of students left in the student section. The upper deck is more filled in than the student section.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed but..

Sep 17, 2015, 6:27 AM

You have to expect that vs those teams...I mean it's no different than any other place...a blow out against a small school for a 12 o'clock game in the summer and it's just gonna happen ...I do think not allowing re entry after leaving would solve it and woukd love to see it at least enforced for big games....sucks getting ready for the 3rd quarter of a big time game and the stadium being about 65 percent full bc Ppl had to run out for a quick drink or convo with friends...do that after the game imo

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not allowing reentry would have no effect on people leaving

Sep 17, 2015, 8:13 AM

for games like Wofford and App St. 99% of the people leaving at half time for those games have no intention of coming back. They want to sit in the shade with a beer and watch at the tailgate.

There's something in these hills.

I've been going to the games since Red Parker era

Sep 17, 2015, 7:14 AM

I have left early for only 2 games. One for my sons soccer tournament 3 years ago, and 1 for the NC State downpour game in the '90's when I had a raging flu.
I don't understand the leaving early thing either. Plenty of old folks around me are suffering in the heat and don't leave. I brought my children from the time they were newborns. We used sunscreen and took them to the concourse if they got too hot.
I mean you only get to go 7 times a year!!!! Why pay all that money and not go for the whole game?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't like leaving games early

Sep 17, 2015, 7:58 AM

But I do it more nowadays with kids in tow than I ever used to. Sometimes they just can't handle the heat, sitting still, late hours, etc. I try very hard to get them to stay the whole time though. Going down on the field afterwards is a big motivator.

I thought there was a great crowd at Wofford, even after halftime...EXCEPT for the student section which was virtually abandoned. I thought that was absolutely shameful. Out of all the people at games, students are the ones who should be sticking around the longest. It's embarrassing to look over there and see 3 sections virtually empty. That never happened in my years as a student...ever. And I was there for the Hatfield and West years.

they leave you're delusional. Not saying I agree with them leaving, but they're just going to a tailgate somewhere to drink or at least the 80% of them that are leaving early.

I hear about our super fans in the past even during West

Sep 17, 2015, 8:11 AM [ in reply to I don't like leaving games early ]

but whenever I watch replays of the games I see crowds that remind me of crowds like the 3rd quarter of the App State game. And these are replays against NC State, UNC, and other ACC schools and its like that all game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Context is important

Sep 17, 2015, 8:20 AM

There weren't as many people at the games, but those who were there stayed longer. Students at least (which usually don't get shown on replays). The only time I can specifically remember the student section really clearing out was when games were held during bad weather.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you're saying not as many people showed up?

Sep 17, 2015, 9:29 AM

Our stadium has seated 80K since the upper deck was built. Any growth since then has been in single digit percentages in west end zone and around the edges of the stadium. Is less people attending better than people showing up and then leaving early?

I was at CU prior to when you were, and people complained about students leaving then, too. They just didn't do it on the internets, because, well, no internets.

What

Sep 17, 2015, 8:46 AM [ in reply to I don't like leaving games early ]

The whole stadium was empty for most games during the West years.

There's something in these hills.

Thats why Hatfield got fired.

Sep 17, 2015, 9:38 AM

Anyone that thinks it wasn't for attendance reasons doesn't get it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I left early.

Sep 17, 2015, 8:08 AM

Sorry I dont really care about watching our 2nd team clean up App State or Wofford. I decided I would take the short time I have in Clemson and wander around Clemson with my wife and visit our favorite spots. For any other games against average opponents I will stay the whole game, but I dont see the point for these glorified scrimmages.

What bothers me are people showing up late. Our fans cant pass up another beer to show up on time for most games. I find that disappointing.

I'm luck to make a few games....

Sep 17, 2015, 8:25 AM

but have to usually leave by end of third. Home responsibilities, raising a grand-daughter, taking care of elderly parent, etc. And if I leave at very end, I get badly trapped where I have to park and can't get out. I'm sure there are other good reasons people leave early. It may even be their own health. Let them be.

Sep 17, 2015, 12:39 PM

but I left the Wofford game due to the heat. App St was much more pleasant, and I was there at the end singing the alma mater.
