I know the starting QB topic is getting old but...

Jan 12, 2018, 2:03 PM

As I read all these posts, I just have to give my 2 cents. Honestly with all that we lost on offense, I was looking at a 10 win season maybe an ACC championship for this past season. But in clemson fashion, this team exceeded expectations. KB has exceeded expectations, but he is not the final answer for QB this coming season. Nick Saban did what Dabo is afraid to do, and that's change QBs in a big game. Jalen Hurts had only lost 2 games as their starter, but yet was benched and a better passer was brought in.

With the talent we have a WR now and coming in, we've got to have somebody who can sling the ball consistently down the field. We cannot waste their talent and dumb down our offensive mentality. Yes our OL was dominated by Bama, but only because they knew KB couldn't stretch the field throwing like DW4 could. So they stacked the box on us.

My prediction for the upcoming season will be very similar to DW4's freshman season. Everyone who watched the early games knew that DW4 should be the starter over Cole Stoudt, but "experience" and seniority made him the starter. Bottom line is this, KB will be replaced by mid season with Trevor Lawrence. As Streeter already said, the best will play. Not knocking KB at all, but the writing should be on the wall. Go Tigers.

Completely agree on all fronts. Very happy with this season and how KB led us. But definitely looking forward to a full offense next season.

To add my 2 cents, did KB really over perform? Or was our defense so good and him able to capitalize as well as our extremely talented backfield in support when we had good field position what was good? He can't stretch the field and averaged less than a TD pass a game. Will he improve enough by next season to stretch the field? I think he did much better than I expected but I don't think he over performed by any means.

of his overall performance and maturity, I would say he exceeded most expectations. Another key was his ball security which helped a lot. If we go back to 2014 when we had an amazing defense... Stoudt couldn't do much of anything to help the team win let alone not turn the ball over.

"Everyone who watched the early games knew that DW4 should be the starter over Cole Stoudt, but "experience" and seniority made him the starter."

You didnt know anything. The coaches knew.
If those games were won, every would praise Dabo's decision to ease Watson into the starting roll.

Watson wasn't the starter because the coaches thought cole was the best chance to win...simple as that.

For instance:
Watson comes in and throws a laser beam td down the field over 2 defenders...yaaaaay...we all go nuts, he is awesome.

But..on that play, just maybe the play call was half back toss the strong side.. if the defense shifts to the strong side you are to audible to a slant route to the WR on the weak side.

So Watson audibles and instead throws a td pass into double coverage. You the fan are estacic... the coach is thinking, " that isn't at all what you are suppose to do. Can i trust you to run this offense."

The fact that watson was put in at all in the uga game is a testimant to how good the coaches thought he was.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I disagree

Jan 12, 2018, 2:33 PM

Cole easily could have been pegged as starter because it was a safer choice, to choose the older player who was expected to have some poise and knowledge of the playbook. However, when said quarterback was put in a real game situation.. he became the cole stoudt we all know now.

You prove that substituting for KB would have changed...

who won that game and I'll consider your opinion. Everything else said is based on speculation and unworthy of any other serious response.

Nick Saban knew they had nothing going on with Hurts in a QB vs Georgia. So he brought Tua in and stretched the field, and they win the title. KB didn't fare much better against Bama, similar to Hurts in the 1st half vs Georgia. Now I'm not saying the outcome would have been any different in our game, But there is room to say that Hunter Johnson could have came out in the 2nd half and stretched the field, similar to what Tua was able to do vs Georgia. It is all speculation, but it is worthy. Saban showed that.
Bottom line is this, our offense has to have a threat at all times to drop a deep ball. Include our stellar talents a RB with that deep threat, and the outcome COULD have been different.

KB, the rbs, wrs, and Oline all stunk up the 'Bama game. No separation by receivers. No blocking by Oline. No running game. But Alex Spence was fine. With this being said, you may be correct about TL coming on progressively next year and taking over at some point. But it won't be easy. KB is good, as are some of the others. We shall see.

All very true, again it's all just speculation at this point. And no it won't be easy for anyone to beat out KB, but we do have a once in a generation type player coming in. Similar to what DW4 was
