I know that Clemson earned the name "Death Valley" because it was

Aug 7, 2016, 9:14 AM

so hot at our traditional 1:00 kickoff time, but does anyone have the backstory on how LSU earned the same nickname. I have a bet with an LSU fan right now.

PS: They hate it when you tell them they smell like a pig in the blanket, but it's true, lol.

TIA
Go Tigers!

I believe it was originally "Deaf Valley"

I don't believe it had anything to do with the heat at 1 pm.***

Possibly given that name during the Paul Dietzel era. It could be before him though but I'm not sure. They were highly successful and rarely lost a home game. I believe their nickname for their defense was the "Chinese Bandits". Don't know about the origin of that.

The coach from Presbyterian named it Death Valley when he said it was where teams come to die. LSU's name came from ebonics and a misunderstanding when an announcer called it "deaf Valley" because it was extremely loud. They thought he meant death, as in "I was scared to "deaf". Our name was first, historically.

Origin of Death Valley

Aug 7, 2016, 9:39 AM

"Through the years, Memorial Stadium has become known as "Death Valley." It was tagged this by the late Presbyterian coach, Lonnie McMillan. After bringing his P.C.teams to Clemson for years and getting whipped, McMillan said the place was like Death Valley. A few years later the name stuck."

The media misunderstanding their "Deaf Valley" moniker

Aug 7, 2016, 9:41 AM

long after our Memorial Stadium became known as Death Valley. The time first I ever heard LSU's stadium referenced by the media as Death Valley was a game there late in 1987 covered by CBS. I believe Jim Nance was a sideline reporter and he called their stadium Death Valley. It was about 4-5 games after CBS and Brent Musburger had been to our Death Valley for the 1987 Clemson/Georgia game.

My understanding is that LSU started calling

Aug 7, 2016, 12:19 PM

their stadium "Deaf" Valley in a tongue-in-cheek manner after the 1958 Sugar Bowl against Clemson. Somewhere down the line it morphed into Death Valley.

That was the 1959 Sugar Bowl, following the 1958 season - won by LSU 7-0.
