I know everyone is entrenched in pulling for their team

Jan 3, 2020, 11:36 AM

and all, but don't you guys think that maybe.... Just maybe... There's a little bit of grey area between conducting a military strike that should have had some sort of Congressional approval, and instigating WW3??

Just spit-balling here.

How is this different than running a covert op in Pakistan

Jan 3, 2020, 11:44 AM

against their governments permission to kill OBL?

I'm in favor of both.

Just wondering how one decides when you should and shouldn't kill the bad guy?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not really trying to debate this at all

Jan 3, 2020, 11:49 AM

because I kind of feel like it needs to play out, but the main difference is that Bin Laden was not a leader of a foreign government. And I suspect Pakistan "opposed" that action on paper only. Mainly to keep islamists in their own country from revolting.

I agree.

Jan 3, 2020, 11:53 AM

Everyone plays politics. My greatest concern over this terrorist's death is that the citizens of Iran will tolerate their sufferings better and longer than they might have otherwise. It may unite Iranians with the Iranian government.

I believe the unrest was building in Iran and the government's problems with the general populous may lessen now. We'll see.

percentage of Iranians have been itching to over throw the current regime. I wouldn't think there's a lot of love for this guy among that part of the population.

GO TIGERS!!

That is not a stretch.

Jan 3, 2020, 12:51 PM

Being that he runs their terrorist arm he is obviously part of the reason the Iranian people are suffering.

Jan 3, 2020, 11:49 AM [ in reply to How is this different than running a covert op in Pakistan ]

It's not really, and I'm all for killing the bad guy..

I just get concerned when the process breaks down and you've got the executive branch, no matter who's running it, exclusively deciding who that bad guy is.

For all accounts, like OBL, this guy is evil as hell and the world is a better place not to have him in it.

And for the record I've been against the executive power grab on just about all of it post 911. I just can't stand when issues like this become partisan political fodder...

Obama set the precedent for assassinations.

Jan 3, 2020, 11:44 AM

Fully within the President's power. Getting Congress to fund a resulting war, that's another matter.

But clearly Trump refuted Iran's message that there was "nothing we could do" after they burned our embassy.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree on both points.

Still doesn't make it constitutional.

Isn't there a difference between assassinating

Jan 3, 2020, 11:52 AM [ in reply to Obama set the precedent for assassinations. ]

the second in command of a foreign government and a terrorist who screws goats as a side gig?

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh come on.. Let's not pretend

Jan 3, 2020, 11:55 AM

like OBL wasn't the "leader" of a regime that we were/are at war with. That's a little extreme, but it certainly makes things more complicated with Iran.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GO TIGERS!!

He wasn't the leader of the taliban or any foreign country

Jan 3, 2020, 12:02 PM

was he? He was the leader of a terrorist network.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fine.. But let's not try to pretend he was just some

I was just trying to be less serious

Jan 3, 2020, 12:08 PM

and I am pretty sure he screwed goats. I realize he was an important figure in the international political scene, but not by being elected, just by being evil and good at planning.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was this guy an elected official?

Jan 3, 2020, 12:10 PM

I mean I know "elected" in Iran is a really loose term.

I think he was more appointed assistant head honcho

Jan 3, 2020, 12:13 PM

but it would be like killing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff.

Which nations will fight in this war?

Jan 3, 2020, 12:00 PM

If you're saying 'Death to The Great Satan,' is a declaration of war then Iran's declaration of war is starting to grow old.

So who sends troops to fight in this war and how can you call it WW3 without the EU, Russia and China sending troops?

I agree. My concern is decisions like this being made for

Jan 3, 2020, 12:21 PM

political advantage. Seems like Obama's name is tied strongly to this and Obama has nothing to do with whether or not this was the correct decision. It seems that everyone on government views and makes decisions based on political considerations, which is disturbing.

I can only hope/trust that those with more knowledge than any of us were properly consulted.
