Holy crap, she just pitched biofuels!

Mar 1, 2022, 10:50 PM

That’s nothing but a big gov dead end subsidy supported series of anecdotal small projects, many of which end in bankruptcy. No scale. No stability in costs or revenues. Dead end.

I know she’s from Iowa, but it’s stunning that she promotes biofuels in 2022.

I hope we don't stake the future on biofuels.

My company has some revenue in this area of biofuels. BH is right. Without the govt/taxpayers footing the bill, it can't work.

And, even if it "works" the amount of fuel is of no consequence to the demand. One of our guys presented a compelling stat...went something like: if 100% of cropland in the USA were taken for biofuels, it would only supply a fraction of that needed just for US Airlines.

Corn should be f/feeding people or livestock, not fuel tanks***

I'm good with bio diesel.

The high cetane numbers are really good for the older diesels.

BIG HOUSE provided an excellent summary about the problem with biofuels.

Everyone should re-read it again.

I know of a specific example where biofuels provides a lot more negative complications than positive contributions to the economy, and makes no difference with respect to 'climate change.'

Tallow. This of course is the fat that comes from the processing of cattle (i.e., meat cutting and meat processing). Industry uses tallow as a feedstock for many chemical products. A derivative of tallow is used as an ingredient in polyethylene film.

When electric generating plants use biofuels to virtue-signal their 'green-ness' the availability of tallow for industry overall comes troublesome and the price skyrockets. This leads to inflation of price for polyethylene film and may also lead to availability problems for PE film.

Oh yeah, and biofuels are not cheaper than hydrocarbon fuels, nor does their use reduce CO2 output. They are used because of tax subsidies.

Tallow itself, as a stand-alone component of the American economy, wouldn't create either meaningful shortages or meaningful inflation.

But when superficially 'good' / virtue signaling gov't programs induce private industry (in this case, using 'green energy' [biofuels] to power electric generating plants), then there are ripple effects. When gov't subsidies for 'green initiatives' (including, but not limited to bio fuels) is done a broad scale, then you get shortages of goods and inflation ... like we have in 2022.

Back around 2008 to 2010 it became clear that biofuels were a dead end. Most projects since then have been small anecdotal and often failing financially.

A key question to ask for energy projects is …… will the private sector finance and insure projects of scale?

See plant Vogtle nuke in GA. Forget about whether or not you support nuclear, the private sector refused to finance it and refused to insure it. Georgia Power proceeded with government insurance and ratepayer financing (just like SC) and now Vogtle is more than $20 billion over budget.

Private sector financing for biofuels will be anecdotal relative to the scale of gas projects, solar projects, wind projects, etc.

So, miss Iowa wants to use government money.
