FSU lands big OL transfer.

Nov 14, 2021, 6:44 PM

Bless Harris. 6'6 330lbs from Lamar. 2 years left.

Signed after visit this weekend.

One way to use the portal is go down a level. Find a kid that has good film. Bring him up to see if he can make the NFL.

This is what the big school s are doing.

Not to disparage Lamar, but it is possible that this prospect would not have the academic credentials to get into Clemson.

Places like FSU, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, OK State, etc etc etc don't worry about that silly academic credentials thingy.

You sure are romanticizing Clemson academic standards for football players.

I thought you went to college to get an education. Getting stupid players hasn't seemed to help South Carolina very much. LOL!!!!

UGA has much higher academic requirements than SCAR .

There's plenty of kids that these other teams that you mention that they got from the portal had a legitimate offer from Clemson. So your premise is not an absolute as y'all try to make it out to be. We don't offer a kid if we know they don't qualify. So yes, there are players we could get from the portal that could help us acedemically and athletically.

Tell that to the starting LB for Alabama

forbidden door & finally dips into the transfer portal, that it would most likely be a player from a G5 or FCS school that's performed good/great at his level but is looking to get where he can get increased exposure/development for next level aspirations.

Re: FSU lands big OL transfer.

Nov 14, 2021, 7:11 PM

Norvell has been very active in the portal.

Jordan Travis is a transfer from Louisville.
Jashawn Corbin, our best RB, is from aTm
Two starting OL are transfers.
Andrew Parchment (the guy who caught the 4th and 14 that set up the winning TD) is from Kansas.

Two starting DBs are transfers.
Kier Thomas, starting DE, is from the coots.

And, probably the best transfer of anybody in the NCAA, Jermain Johnson (DE) is from UGA.

Johnson will almost certainly be a first round pick, probably mid first round. He has double digit sacks. Had 3 sacks against Miami, plus 2 other TFLs. He is a beast.

But, lest folks get too upset over Dabo not using the portal, remember what a shambles our program was in when Norvell took over. Among the many things Willie Taggart did very poorly was recruiting. (He had two signing classes and signed exactly 0 quarterbacks, as just one example.) We have something like 20 transfers on the team.

He will be active again this year, especially looking for OL and LB. But, as time goes on, he will be less active. As the talent level from recruiting increases, the need for the portal will decrease.

He’s found a lot of starters out of the portal.
He’s also 4-6.

Re: FSU lands big OL transfer.

Nov 14, 2021, 10:19 PM

Exactly!

Using the4 portal to take a horrible team and make it competitive is one thing. Using it to build a championship team by finding a handful of starters is something else entirely.

Top teams may cherry pick one or two guys a year, but they won't use it as a cornerstone of their recruiting.

There might be a high profile QB in the portal soon. He is currently at a school that rhymes with University of Moklahoma.

Not a fan of that dude for a number of reasons, least of all his play. Lane Kiffin or maybe the Pac 12 will be a good fit for him.

No way in hell. Bring in an FCS guy, a freshman, or another Swinney brother instead;that guy has been a cancer at every level, a talented cancer sure.

He was the #1 QB that class and we didn’t offer, for a reason.

Re: FSU lands big OL transfer.

Nov 14, 2021, 9:10 PM

The way we should be looking at the portal is…evaluating guys on bad teams, targeting good players, gauging interest in transferring, then they go into the portal and official communication and visits can occur.

Many people are too focused on the guys in the portal. For the guys we need to be going after, entering the portal is a step further down the line.

There’s nothing “big” about the signing yet.

Nov 14, 2021, 10:49 PM

If he’s got two years of eligibility then we can take a look two years from now to see how big it was.

Wanted to add, I can’t find any stats on performance.

Nov 14, 2021, 11:29 PM

According to one article I read:

“He played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman at Lamar in 2019, starting two. He started all five games he played in during the 2020 season, working at left tackle before his season ended with an injury.“

Played in 10 games, starting 2, on a 4-8 FCS program…then started five games on a 2-4 FCS team before he got injured…this after being a 2 star recruit with one offer (Lamar).

Is this a serious example at how Clemson can use the portal? Maybe the kid will be all-conference. I’ll be happy for him if he is. But as I am often told (and have no idea myself), O Line is the toughest place on the field to come in and be impactful. You need to learn the plays and gel with your fellow lineman. This sounds like quite the reach.
