The legacy left behind

My face-to-face time with Bruce wasn't as extensive as many of y'all's, but those experiences were always happy ones. Reading your posts, I'm struck by the impact this man made on so many lives here. Last night, I started thinking more about the bigger picture here; the legacy a person like him leaves behind.
I lost a friend and former coworker a few years back to cancer. My wife had become good friends with her, too. When we reflected on her life at the funeral and afterwards, the gravity of her legacy truly weighed on us. This was a woman who never had an unkind word to say to anyone, always tried to help others--especially those weaker than her--, never played dramatic political games at work or tried to backstab others, and always treated people like she was their loving mother, even if they were just a few years younger (she was only five years older than me).
I think what hurt the most losing her was realizing that such an incredible person had been taken from us too soon. And that far less deserving people--myself included--who lacked such heart remained here.
Celtic struck me as a similar person. It's clear this was a man who strived to bring joy to people's lives. He didn't care how well he knew you, or what you believed in, or any other minor detail about you. I didn't know him well, but god ####, reading all these posts, I know what kind of man he was.
There aren't enough Bruces/Celtics in this world.
And it brings me back to those thoughts I had about my friend. I see reading his obit that Celtic was 59; that's far too early to strip this world of someone with such a big heart. A man whose life fuel seemed to be great beer and making other people happy. And he leaves behind a legacy of people on a message board, many who are strangers to each other, that remember his character and the good times he brought to them, whether they were years of camaraderie or just a few hours.
We sit back and look at people like Bruce and say, "I need to try to be more like that."
Yet, deep down, we know we aren't capable of it. Our hearts aren't that big.
Maybe that's what sucks the most about losing them.

caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

Very well stated. I never met Bruce, but from his posts and from what has been said about him, do wish I had. Even though I never did meet him, I do feel a a degree of sadness that one of the people who made this world a better place has left us.

This is where I've gotten too nice for my old humor.

Old me would have made a joke about taking FBC first next time, but then it's almost guaranteed that he'd perish in a horrible moonshine still explosion or drowning in an open septic field, and I'd spend the rest of my life wondering if I caused it, so I just keep stuff like this generic and poster-agnostic now.
