Too young to remember what happened to Coach Ford

Sep 26, 2021, 12:39 PM

But is this how it all ended for him? I hope we don’t do the same thing to Coach Swinney.

Ford got sideways with administrators. His 89 team was good. I was a freshman that year.

No. Coach Ford was still wining.

Clemson parted ways with him due to philosophical differences. Whatever that means.

Coach Ford wanted a new athletic dorm instead

of the Academic Learning Center, and he went over the heads of the university president and the AD (Bobby Robinson) and appealed to the alumni on the issue…so they fired him. I still hate Bobby Robinson’s guts, and I can’t even remember who that insignificant president was.

Means his tiger pulse was low because he called it like he saw it.

No, Ford openly fought with the ad and higher ups

Sep 26, 2021, 12:44 PM

and to be fair the ad did the same to him. They hated each other but.

The AD at the time, Bobby Robinson, a good man I might add, was taking orders from his bosses. The President and the Board of Trustees. That is who Danny got sideway with. Danny wanted to build big time facilities, including dorms for the football players (sound familiar?), but the President and Board of Trustees didn’t want to. The AD was the messenger and took all of the heat.

I was/is a Danny Ford fan; but, Danny could not accept he was a Coach and not in charge of Clemson University. So he had to go. He forgot the most important rule in management. Rule 1 "The Boss is always right, when the Boss is not right, refer to rule #1".

They really showed him, didn’t they! We basically dropped football fir 20 years. Idiots

What’s really idiotic is thinking a football coach has any real say in University matters. Danny thought that he and the people who show up 7 Saturdays a year had some kind of power over the administration…they don’t.

Danny gambled and lost. Funny thing is that the hill he chose to die on (athletic dorms) were outlawed by the NCAA shortly after.

True. And if I recall correctly, Clemson seldomly passed. It was line them up and we'll knock them back. True smash mouth football.

We ran the option

Sep 26, 2021, 2:00 PM

Back then, we referred to the offense as 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

The Air Rodney game was fun where we tried to come back down I think my 28’pts to NC State and almost did.’

I enjoyed how Ford’s team would always have that one dumb ### loss to a Duke or such every year (like in 89l

Down 30 at half and came back lost 30-28. Big tight end Cooley dropped a pass that would have gotten us in FG range.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, and his 90’ team could have won a national championship

Sep 26, 2021, 1:00 PM

if the admin hadn’t got rid of him. They felt he was trying to be bigger than the university with some of his wishes for the football team. Only knock on Ford was that he would loose one he shouldn’t every year, and people would always complain that he didn’t throw the ball enough. We always felt we’d beat anybody we played because we were so physical.

Still remember the plane over Death Valley saying “Howard built it, Ford tilled it, Hatfield killed it”. Always felt kind of bad for Hatfield. Should have been a preacher instead of a football coach.

coach Ford got canned for illegal recruiting which was

He was canned for trying to go over the prez and board's heads, pushing for a football dorm!

Times were changing. Football coaches were becoming responsible for players academic status. Ford just wanted to coach football. Heads butted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have to disagree with that. Coach Ford

Sep 26, 2021, 3:13 PM

may not have regarded the Academic Learning Center as a necessity, but he never stopped trying to get players who left school without a degree to come back and finish. He was always ready to help them do it.

Re: Too young to remember what happened to Coach Ford

Im surprised that no one has mentioned this yet... but Ford committed a lot of NCAA violations and was fired soon after the second round hit the university. Clemson got some stiff penalties because of him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem wasn’t Coach Ford; it was

Sep 26, 2021, 3:23 PM

out-of-control alumni with too much money and not enough sense, who thought they were “helping” with recruiting. (Look up B.C. Inabinet.) The ONLY thing the NCAA ever dug up on Coach Ford was paying a player’s dental bill: the kid’s teeth got messed up in a game, he left town without paying the bill, and Coach Ford didn’t want the dentist to get stiffed, so he paid it. And there you have the facts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The problem wasn’t Coach Ford; it was

Sep 26, 2021, 4:04 PM

Well that doesn't explain the more than a dozen recruiting violations over the dead period. Sure... its 'just' the dental bill and you have all the facts...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Basically stubbornness and ego did Ford in

Sep 26, 2021, 3:25 PM

and the same could happen to Dabo if he can’t adapt

Ford’s demise was not for on the field performance, and I doubt Dabo’s will, either. But if he does not make some changes, it could turn into another football bs admin turf war
