Dec 11, 2016, 1:47 PM

Yeah but coots actually makes sense. Taters doesn't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson is the agricultural university of SC

Dec 11, 2016, 2:09 PM

They're basically calling us farmers/country bumpkins to their urbane sophistication.

with something so clever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I could be wrong, but

Dec 11, 2016, 2:04 PM

I think it goes back to 2001, when we played on the blue field for the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The late 90s and early 2000s weren't great for Clemson football, and it was sort of a joke bowl.

Since it was in Idaho, home of many potatoes, I believe the nickname started then.

But I could be wrong. It's been known to happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No

Dec 11, 2016, 2:07 PM

It's supposedly because we're all farmers and grow potatoes.

Re: I could be wrong, but

Dec 11, 2016, 4:59 PM [ in reply to I could be wrong, but ]

I heard from a Carolina fan it is bc Clemson has a great agriculture program.... agriculture... growing... that's how they came up with "tater". Just hear say.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The difference is that we actually embrace "Tater" while ...

Dec 11, 2016, 9:31 PM

Potatoes are one of the worlds most important staples that almost everyone [except for coots] needs and loves.

Quite simple really.

Farming is a noble trade and far too few of us are getting into it. Average age of a Farmer in America is 57. If there isn't a some recruiting done in this industry and fast, expect food prices to quadruple in the next decade or so.

I always heard the coots say

Re: Just out of curiosity... Why do Coots call us

Dec 11, 2016, 2:12 PM

It's because they were told that Clemson is northwest of them so they think we're a school in Idaho. They're not very good at geography.

Most probably came about because we started as an agricultural college. I've heard the word "taters" used by Coots since at least the late 90s.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Baked taters!
Cheesy taters!
Chopped taters!
Shredded taters!

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've always heard it was because back during the great

Dec 11, 2016, 4:47 PM

depression, some IPTAY members traded food for their IPTAY fees:

http://www.clemsontigers.com/fls/28500/old_site/pdf/iptay/IPTAY_SEP_brochure.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=28500

The organization was first established as a secret organization and initial
membership dues were set at $10.00 a year (I Pay Ten A Year). A little
more than $1,600.00 came into the coffers the first year of IPTAY, even in
the heart of the Great Depression. Some payments were made in the form
of barter. Milk, sweet potatoes, turnip greens, and the like were accepted
in the initial efforts to build membership

Re: I've always heard it was because back during the great

Dec 11, 2016, 10:46 PM

The phrase does originate out of their put down during the Great Depression per my late Father, class of 1944. Having done post-graduate study at USuck for a year, trust me when I say half their fans, especially the current generation have no idea of the heritage of either institution nor do they seem to care.

As long as Clemson continues to win a majority of meetings in the coming years it won't matter what their ignorant fans call us!
All we have to say in reply is one word. Loser sounds most appropriate!

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It comes from a bumper sticker they made

Dec 11, 2016, 9:55 PM

IPTAY. I Plant Taters Avery Year. I have caught flack from some T betters for my handle but I am proud of my agricultural heritage of my anscestors and my university. I'm a Clemson Man and a Dead Fan so I'm a Tater and A Head, don't like it, don't really care

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It comes from a bumper sticker they made

Dec 12, 2016, 6:22 AM

When I was a kid, the gamecock fans always said that IPTAY stood for I Plow Twice A Year. I haven't heard the tater acronym.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, little known fact...

Dec 12, 2016, 6:47 AM

It's actually a term used on THEM as it started with an abbreviation of a phrase they say:

"WaiT Until lATER" - said every Coot in this "rivalry"

Hence, 'TATERs

;)
