The TE Position....a few questions for those in the know.

Apr 16, 2013, 12:59 AM

How has Jay Jay McCullough looked this spring? He was a player I had high hopes for coming out of HS, but I haven't heard anything about him this spring.

I have a ton of confidence in Seckinger as a receiving threat, but is his blocking where it needs to be? I imagine he will be the starter, at least for now.

Is there any chance Maclain could move back to TE, out of necessity, just for his superior blocking ability.

And is there any indication from the staff what the post-spring depth chart looks like? Has Leggett already passed McCullough?

Seckinger weighs around 210. McCoullough is a tremendous athlete, but it seems Leggett is the future. Both weigh in around 235, but Swinney says Leggit does not get rattled and is very mature for a freshman.

I think McClain is expected to push some at tackle, they are still figuring out who the best 5 are.

Just a guess

McCullough, Seckinger, and Leggett are going to fight for playing time at this point.

McClain is an OT now. He is battling for a starting role this summer.

I know between Allen and Ford we seem to think that TE is a big concern, but in 2010 the TE was 11th in Tulsa's receptions. Chad can adapt evidently better than we as a fanbase can.

agree, and do not think many people expected Ford to have the year that he did. I think we will be fine as well.

I had complete faith in Ford's production last season

And intend to have the same expectations for our TE's for 2013. The athletes we have there are huge mismatches. Leggett could possibly have a "Sammy like" freshman impact this season.

I'm not "in the know" but my predictions are

Leggett and Seckinger split the pass catching duties as both are young and may be up and down. It would not surprise me at all to see Maclain in as a blocking TE on some short yardage plays. Who wouldn't want an extra athletic offensive tackle on the end of the line on a 4th and 1. He most likely still has his pass catching skills for some tackle eligible plays as well on play action.

To answer your questions....

Yes, I understand Maclain is now being considered for a move back to TE for power flex formations (short-yardage, goal line) as neither Leggett or Seckinger are blocking TE's at this point.

I would have to say the depth chart is 1) Leggett 2) Seckinger at this point.

We NEED to seal the deal with Blazevich in the 2014 cycle.
