I forgot how intimidating Danny Ford looked when he was younger.

I remember Rodney Williams saying “the last thing you wanted to see was Coach Ford staring at you from the sideline during practice ! “

I think part of his success was that folks were scared of him and knew his players were about to beat the he!! out of them on the field.

My all time favorite was Barry Switzer whining about losing to Clemson because the Tigers practiced a week longer than Oklahoma. I always thought Switzer was an idiot after hearing that. They thought they could run past Danny’s boys but got punched in the mouth !

That was Danny Ford Clemson Football y’all !

I was in Orlando to see Clemson destroy Penn State in 1988. I will never forget after the game Joe Paterno was complaining that "Clemson took the bowl too seriously and practiced too much, like they were playing for a national championship or something."

Joe "pedophile protector" Paterno, also made a joke at a combined team function about being with Danny's mama. A poster on another site that played on that team posted about it. Wish I could remember all the details from his story but basically he said Coach Ford was livid. The worst beating Paterno ever took in a bowl game.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.


I don't think they were scared of him as much as...

they had a healthy respect for him.

Back in the day, all student athletes shared the weight room in Jervey so you got to know athletes from a lot of the other sports. When Coach Ford walked in, it was always funny to see his players reactions. All of the goofing-off and joking-around stopped immediately. Some of his assistant coaches even reacted the same way.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.


I thought it was hilarious how Danny commented

that that one picture of him looked like Elvis. I think he was mostly commenting on the sideburns, but I've thought for years that certain shots of Danny from the early 80's and late 70's resemble Elvis a bit. LOL!

The late 70's and early 80's were just different times. Every coach on our teams had complete respect from the players. People were not obsessed with who was recruited but were thrilled to watch our teams get better because of coaching, dedication and work. I don't remember how we ranked in recruiting or even if there were rankings but obviously we could play with anyone.

Barry Switzer was a gigantic ##### nozzle…he absolutely hated Clemson. It was great to see the Tigers give him an L.

Think he's tough , imagine playing at Alabama under The Bear. Coach Ford brought that same intensity with him having seen firsthand how successful that formula is. Three yards and a cloud of dust. That's who we were back then. Add a punishing defense that was just relentless all day we simply wore the opponent out

think they had the market cornered on tough, physical football. I suspect both Osborne and Switzer came away from those games wishing they had worked a little harder in preparation for Clemson.

about 20 years ago I was at a quick shop in greenville and went in to pay for gas. coach Ford was there at the counter buying cigarettes. he was bigger than i expected and physically imposing. he said hello and got in his old pick up and went on his way.
