I’m always amazed and impressed with Striperfan

In my humble opinion of having been a tiger fan for 64 years, having taught school for awhile, having built a small business over a 40 year span, and being at least what I think like Dabo a Holy Spirit Christian, Striperfan has hit it between the eyes. Todd Bates wanted at least a Co Def Cord Title. Especially when Conn got the job over him he did not like it and called BV. BV called Dabo. Dabo named Todd assistant HC and gave him a raise before that. Like many players now a days he hit the portal to OK with Dabos blessing. BV only hired Todd with Dabos blessing. Dabo and Brent are closer than a brother. Todd was going to leave due to his felling being hurt the first good chance. Dabo could see this and had rather have him in Norman where he could not hurt us as much in recruiting in the future and with Brent not allowing him to interfere with our present process and recruiting. Dabo says the best is yet to come and some of you have never learned to accept him as I have at his word.

Bates may have left cause he doesn't like living in a region that has 32 straight days of rain followed by artic bomb cyclones. I had to scrape FROZEN water off my window this morning.. WHAT IS THIS MADNESS!!!!

communicate? I'd say that chance is zero.
For speculation though, I believe these conversations occurred before the bowl game and that Bates stayed to coach that as we had no one in the system who has a DL background. Any conversation is a professional courtesy, but Dabo and BV are more than just pros, they're close friends.

With you on most of it but not the part of Dabo wanting him in Norman so it wouldn't interfere with recruiting etc etc. You of all people should know business is business. Bates and BV will go after our recruits harder than anyone in the country if it benefits Oklahoma.
As for the other part, I like striperfan posts. He's been very helpful answering some of my posts. It's a wonderful scenario that is a reasonable assumption to make. That said, unless you're saying he's on Dabo's staff with inside info, we have no idea what or how it went down. It's a chance BV called Bates first and said I need you in Norman, Bates accepted and turned his res letter into Dabo.
Yeah, Bates probably writes a heartfelt letter thanking Dabo and Clemson... Anything else would be career suicide. Same letters are put out at GA and Bama et al.

Let's just examine some known facts

1) Dabo and BV very close friends with great love and respect for each other
2) BV wanted Goodwin first and foremost, but Dabo already had that covered
3) No coaches on staff followed BV until Bates, just support staff
4) No CU players have transferred to OU
5) Only one recruit, and right now he has no scholarship. He's a walk on
6) BV's son is staying at Clemson
7) BV with absolutely nothing but the highest of praise for Dabo and CU, and it was genuine
I think BV has demonstrated he isn't poaching anyone. He's not Lincoln Riley. You don't have to have inside info to see these things

1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 are indisputable. I would look for 4 to change over the next few years as a handful of BV Clemson recruits get passed over for starting jobs in Tiger Town. Future recruiting (5) will be interesting - respectful but competitive.
My take is for all the deserved love for Dabo and all these committed Clemson coaches, coaches are still paid employees of the university and booster clubs. And most coaches are mercenaries whose allegiance to their families, fellow coaches, sometimes their alma mater, and their paycheck (rightfully in most cases) exceeds the allegiance they feel for their current employer.
It's been said many times before -- college football is a business. And it became even more of a business in 2021. TNet is all about the Tigers, but these coaches and players are free agents now more than ever. We are fortunate Dabo and Clemson inspire a tremendous amount of loyalty.

and I don't think Dabo has an issue with that. Recruiting is recruiting, let the best man win. But BV wasn't going to pillage this class like Riley did to OU. Nor was BV going to accept any transfers this year. BV is all class, just like Dabo. But he'll compete on who he thinks can help him, just like Dabo will in the future

Your characterization of Bates as being overly emotional is unfair in my opinion.
Bates responded like any other reasonable human being with career aspirations. He learned the news of the co-DC hires by Dabo, he likely thought and prayed about it, and then he put out feelers to see if any better opportunities presented themselves. A better opportunity did present itself, so he likely thought and prayed about it some more, and decided to go for it.
I do not see this as a rushed decision by Bates at all. Given the timeframe, it seems that he was quite rational and mature in how he handled it.
Putting our Clemson allegiances aside, I believe he made the best decision for himself and his career. As much as I would have liked for him to be content to stay at Clemson as a position coach, I don't blame him for taking the promotion at Oklahoma.
