AJ Henning in the Portal

2

Apr 24, 2023, 2:58 PM

Michigan WR has entered the transfer portal. Former HS four star receiver. Maybe someone Clemson would be interested in? Ok, ok, never mind. Dabo wouldn't go for it, I know.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand why we would even entertain it?

A) Aren't we still have two scholarships over the limit?
B) Am I reading the stats right? He caught nine passes last season?

198 total yards receiving in 3 years. That's exactly who we should be going after.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

My guess is that he wants more PT at the WR position...

Apr 24, 2023, 3:12 PM

He wasn't utilized much as a WR while at Michigan, but he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection as a lick/punt returner.

When you mention kick/punt returner my ears perk up.

Mychah Pittman was the FSU punt returner last year. He had off season hip surgery. There s speculation that Norvell might be looking to the portal for a returner who also plays WR.

I have no idea if this would be a guy he'd be interested in.

But, I'll guarantee you Norvell knows about him. He has a department (one guy and some GAs, I think) who have the sole responsibility to keep up with the portal and notify the coaching staff whenever anyone of interest enters.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Norvell seems intent on living/dying by the portal.***

I think FSU is resurging no doubt. Maybe not to the level of our 2014 to 2015 rise to the NC game, but definitely enough to get them all of the hype they have. I’m a tiny bit worried about our game next year, but we’ll still be better. Maybe an OT game in the Valley.

Travis worries me. And I really do think a transfer like Cypress at CB will matter enormously. Especially for the Clemson game. We could only have 2 good receivers at that point, and less if Cypress is lockdown. Just don’t know about their line play and if they’re able to compete in the trenches against the big dogs.

Cypress after Spring practice.

Apr 24, 2023, 9:19 PM

General consensus among those who observed practices was that he did not perform at the high level expected.

Most folks seem to think he was going to come in and immediately separate himself from the other corners and be the "lockdown corner" for the defense.

After Spring the consensus was he will probably be a starter, but he did not do anything to stand out head and shoulders above the other two or three best corners.

Not really.

Apr 24, 2023, 6:15 PM [ in reply to Norvell seems intent on living/dying by the portal.*** ]

When he got there the talent level was abysmal. And, this hurt recruiting. Very few 4 and no 5 star players were even interested enough to come for a recruiting visit. And, he knew that it would take years and years to build the quality through high school drafts. He needed transfers (grad students, portal and JUCO guys) for immediate help.

But, he also knew that building through transfers was not the long term solution. He has improved HS recruiting drastically since he got here. Now 4 and 5 star players are coming on campus for visits. The quality of HS signees is improving every year.

As time goes on you will see him using the portal less and less. He won't abandon it completely, but it will be used much more selectively.

Agree. Just like scar and everyone else. Crazy. Of course they're recruiting. And recruiting at a high level. I'm still afraid we'll learn the hard way.

You’re way off base Brett…….

BigCuFan didn’t say he was a kick return specialist, he said he was a LICK specialist. Probably something to do with drag queens. You simply didn’t read carefully enough.

Y’all need to relax on the stats of these transfers. Their stats are reflective of why the hel* they’re transferring.

I don’t find it to be insulting to this program to take in kids from other schools. Especially if they’ve got the talent. But it’s just not what Dabo will do. You will see him pursue a transfer maybe once every 4 years or something. It’s our culture to stay within the program and develop.

Yeah their stats reflect they suck. This guy will probably transfer to a school he's capable of playing such as Charlotte.

Yeah like Jameson Williams coming out of Ohio State into the portal and many others****

Yeah I guess using that logic you could say Joe Burrow sucked at Ohio State.

Or Justin Fields sucked at Georgia.

And also, sorry but I don’t really know of anybody but 2 WRs on our roster who have shown they’re worth being here and know how to stay healthy. Williams and Turner. And we don’t even fully know about either yet.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"shown they’re worth being here" !?!?!?

Apr 24, 2023, 3:28 PM

What exactly does that mean and on what basis are you making that statement?

You are aware of our WR problems right? It’s all anyone ever talks about here? Where’ve you been?

The last 2 seasons make up my basis of evidence. I also said staying healthy. If you’re implying Collins has shown his stuff, I could agree but he can’t stay healthy.

You're seriously going to compare 2 QB's to the WR position? Multiple receivers take the field at the same time. Only 1 QB takes the field and in the case of Fields he transferred to OSU after his freshman season at UGA. He would've been the starter at UGA but just didn't want to be there anymore.

Re: AJ Henning in the Portal

Apr 24, 2023, 3:38 PM

How do you know 100% that these transfer receivers don’t have the potential to be a lot better at Clemson? Guy mentioned Jameson Williams and he’s correct.

You’re just for some reason doubtful of transfers making a difference.

Anyone can cherry pick one example out of 100. No different than 2 and 3-star recruits that get overlooked. I'm not doubtful of transfers, we went after 2 O-linemen last year. Understandably 1 went to Michigan and 1 went to Wisconsin. Point is we went after guys that can actually help us. I'm dead set against going after players that haven't produced in 3 years of college football.

would you have rather Tyler Davis, Ruke, XT, Mascoll, Jaylen Phillips, Sheridan Jones, Will Putnam and others to have declared for the draft and given us the scholarships to sign him, seeing as we're two over the limit, or roll with those guys?

Re: AJ Henning in the Portal

Not sure why some want to stay worked up over the portal for the following reasons:

Dabo prefers to build from the HS ranks in general
We are still two spots over the 85 limit and Dabo does not cut players
Choosing a guy who has seem limited production does not seem like an obvious choice
Anyone you would really want is probably looking for an upfront NIL agreement which we do not currently offer

Why not try to enjoy looking forward to next season instead of running up your BP over a unlikely situation?

Do you not read anything on TigerNet? We are over on scholarships and have to deal with that.
