I don’t think Venables will be Oklahoma’s next coach, but

Dec 1, 2021, 7:15 PM

I can’t say that with a high confidence level.

Oklahoma is a really good job and if he wants to be a head coach, this is the job you’d think he needs to accept.

With that said, I believe he knows he has a great situation at Clemson. He gets to do what he loves - coach defense - and get paid very well to do so without the immense pressure that comes with being a head coach.

My last comment on this situation is that we must allow for the fact that being a “family man” does not prevent him from taking the Oklahoma job. He obviously loves his family, but let’s not act like the only way to support and love your family is to remain the DC at Clemson.

These are my thoughts, which are worth what you paid for them.

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

Good point.

Obviously their facilities are top notch and they pay coaches as much as they want.
Hard to compete with that.

Judge, is there ever a point you will let go and say we need a new BB coach?

I agree with you. It is a great opportunity that if offered would be hard not to take. BV is very popular in Oklahoma. He would be a great hire.

I think they may want a pro head coach or coordinator.

Will be interesting

If I was CBV, I would put the big bucks out of my mind, and

Dec 1, 2021, 8:43 PM

I would think long and hard about what I would be walking into. It just might not be an ideal situation for one of the best defensive minds in the country.

Brent Venables is making $2.5M at Clemson. Lincoln Riley was making $7.5M at OU.

We, as Clemson fans, need to start accepting the fact that $5M a year is a lot of money and BV will not be able to turn down that job. $2.5M is a lot of money, but $7.5M is a whole lot more. It's going to come down to money, and his family will tell him to take the job.

We should be thankful for these past 10 years. I'm very grateful and appreciative. But Dabo found Brent. Dabo will find someone else.

IN DABO WE TRUST

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Brent cares much about money and power

Dec 1, 2021, 8:08 PM

When you're making $2.5M a year, and you and your family are perfectlt happy in life, why would you change jobs? If you're making $2.5M per year, and you have everything you want and need, why chase money?

If Brent goes to OU it won't be because of money. It will be because he loves Norman and he'll have the opportunity to be a head coach. No one is even sure Brent wants to be a head coach though.

I personally don't think BV is going anywhere.

If you can’t have everything you want on $2.5 MM per year you won’t have what you want making $7.5 MM either. I made a good salary most of my life and it provided my family a comfortable way of life - but it was no where near $2.5MM per year. This probably isn’t about money.

I think if he wanted to be a head coach he wouldn't have waited until he turned 50.

I think him and Dabo are flying on the Private Jet in these beautiful skies while recruiting laughing their asss off about the whole thing and enjoying the free press.

Only if you allow for the possibility that his family...

is entrenched with the local people and in the culture. If you've worked your way through all that then I won't argue with you.

As usual I agree with you Judge. If he is offered OU ( has he been?), this would be the job to take a run at being HC. I can’t think of a better opportunity. I believe it is is now or perhaps never for him.

I tend to agree with the only twist being that the OK we are referring to isn’t the same job they have always been able to offer-they are about to enter uncharted waters in what amounts to an experimental phase in NCAA football-entering the SEC and a reorganization impending with the $$ for players and the portal open constantly. If Brent is a smart man who sees the game as a whole(said in jest as he is certainly one of the most intellectual organized and logical thinkers we know) he will wait and see what, when, where, why, and how things happen and how head coaches deal with this new circus that has been created. Kind of “you dont want to be the coach that ushers OK into the SEC, you want to be the guy who takes his place when he gets beat down by opponents, impatient fan bases, transferring players, and increased recruiting competition.”

Ok City and that area are well, just Oklahoma. Go there and see yourself.
