Do we have to go through this stupid "wasting scholarships

Apr 15, 2015, 4:31 PM

on legacies" crap again?

Can we all agree that the one thing this staff does unquestionably good is recruit? Good.

I can show you a 4-or-5-star-next-big-thing who ended up not doing anything at Clemson for whatever reason and just as many 3-or-less-star guys who ended up being BIG contributors and often NFL guys.

Remember these guys?
Darius Gaither (4 star)
Scotty Cooper (4 star)
Willy Korn (4 star)
Markish Jones (4 star)
Spencer Adams (4 star)
Marquan Jones (4 star)
Kenneth Page (4 star)
Bryce McNeal (4 star)
Desmond Brown (4 star)
Mike Bellamy (5 star)
Cortez Davis (4 star)
Lateek Townsend (4 star)
Zac Brooks (so far) (4 star)
Chad Kelly (4 star)

What about these?
Michael Palmer (2 star)
Andre Branch (2 star)
Chad Diehl (3 star)
Coty Sensabaugh (2 star)
Rashard Hall (3 star)
Jaron Brown (3 star)
Spencer Shuey (3 star)
Vic Beasley (3 star)
Bashaud Breeland (3 star)
Grady Jarrett (3 star)
Adam Humphries (2 star)
DJ Reader (3 star)
Wayne Gallman (3 star)

The truth is, star ratings are a fun thing to follow (when we're hauling them in) but they're irrelevant once a guy sets foot on campus. Our staff has swung and missed on some "blue chip" guys and hit some home runs with guys that the recruiting services either missed, misevaluated, or underestimated.

I trust this staff to evaluate talent.

Had to give you a TU for 10,000

Apr 15, 2015, 4:40 PM

But I do disagree with your post. I understand 2 and 3 stars can be great players, but I think people often get worried that the legacy recruits didn't earn the scholarship themselves, that it was their dad who did. If a two star is a better player than a four star, I trust the coaches in seeing that, but we need to be careful that we don't just offer because of a kid's family

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks. Most of these legacy guys get offered

Apr 15, 2015, 4:41 PM

greyshirt or preferred walk-on spots.

The staff wouldn't throw the offers out if they weren't confident the numbers would work.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm aware we give them those, but I can see why some fans

Apr 15, 2015, 4:44 PM

Would get nervous about giving them scholarships. As long as we develop them into great players, I don't care who we offer!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm guessing they're thinking about our previous flop legacy

Apr 15, 2015, 4:49 PM [ in reply to Thanks. Most of these legacy guys get offered ]

scholly to that Michael Dean kid what's his name?

Apr 15, 2015, 4:41 PM

what will we talk about in the dog days of summer now?

:)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whatever you do, always give 100%.....unless it's donating blood

Purple helmets, firing Leggett, the Oculus, etc.

Apr 15, 2015, 4:43 PM

Same things we always talk about

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great post

Apr 15, 2015, 4:41 PM

Glad we hit on Sensabaugh, Branch, Palmer, Humphries, Grady, etc. Player development is huge and stars don't mean sh!t when it comes time to grind in the weight room, class room, etc. I trust our coaches too. They know what kind of player they're getting.

Dabo could scholly a raccoon and we should be fine with it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see any legacies on your list?

Apr 15, 2015, 4:51 PM

I'm not sure how bigtime 3 star recruits with multiple offers are supposed to match up with legacies with no offers

Re: I don't see any legacies on your list?

Apr 15, 2015, 5:00 PM

Andre Branch: "zero offers"

https://rivals.yahoo.com/clemson/football/recruiting/player-Andre-Branch-58623

Coty Sensabaugh: "zero offers"

https://rivals.yahoo.com/clemson/football/recruiting/player-Coty-Sensabaugh-61298

I'm not saying these guys are necessarily going to be All-ACC players but I think it's ridiculous to write them ALL off just because no other staffs took the time to drive to Central, SC or wherever to evaluate these guys.

And again, none of them are getting Ray Ray McCloud's scholarship. They've all been "wait and see" guys who end up greyshirting or walking on.

I think it's a waste of bandwidth to complain about this stuff given the recruiting roll the staff has been on the last couple of years.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wasn't saying all of the guys on his list were bigtime

Apr 15, 2015, 5:14 PM

three star recruits. Some of them are, some are not. I'm sure that all the legacy recruits would have been offered scholarships anyway. There offer had nothing to do with their dad. But the list provided had a few bigtime 3 star recruits. There is a difference.

Why didn't you include the 2-3 stars that didn't do a thing at Clemson or the 4-5 stars player that did a lot of good things at Clemson

Yes - some people like to hear themselves type ....

Seems like we could save an old thread and plug in the applicable names. It would save everyone time and trouble.

I like the "star" ratings, as they are a good general

Apr 15, 2015, 6:11 PM

indicator of who is recruiting successfully and who is not; in fact, they are the only forward looking indicator we have, flawed as it is. Having said that, I trust our coaches when they bring in legacy recruits or gray shirts and such. If we were sucking in recruiting and on the field, then there may be reason for concern, but we're not; in fact, we are building a powerhouse football program with recruiting. Our staff has proven time and again that they are capable of recruiting head-to-head with the best out there - and winning their fair share; therefore it would be absurd to question much of anything they do.

No doubt!

Great list you made:
Michael Palmer (2 star)
Andre Branch (2 star)
Chad Diehl (3 star)
Coty Sensabaugh (2 star)
Rashard Hall (3 star)
Jaron Brown (3 star)
Spencer Shuey (3 star)
Vic Beasley (3 star)
Bashaud Breeland (3 star)
Grady Jarrett (3 star)
Adam Humphries (2 star)
DJ Reader (3 star)
Wayne Gallman (3 star)

Look at the Horned Frogs. Once I think they had a "4 star" and dismissed him.
Who wants them on their sched this year?

There are 4+ million seniors graduating from high school this year.
Many thousands of them play football. Several thousand are very, very good.
There is no way for them to be accurately ranked by any service's "star" system.
It comes down to recognizing talent, finding the right fit for the right team at the right time, and good coaching.

The posters arguing USC is in ruins because of our recruiting aren't going to like this logic.
