Why do players sometimes slow down before end zone?

I noticed Sammy noticeably slowed down on his 96 yard catch. How can they tell how close a defender is to them?
Seems like a risky move to me. Someone could come up from behind and strip the ball. I recall James Davis doing that to a coot once I believe that had intercepted one of our passes.

Steve Tasker did it to Leon Lett in the Super Bowl

when the Bills played the Cowboys in '94 or '95. Hall of Shame moment on the world stage. Lett had recovered a fumble or made a pick (can't remember which), began celebrating around the 10 yard line and Tasker came in from behind and knocked it out of his hand through the end zone for a touch back. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving team with the stars on their helmet.

now, most can look up and see the video board

as they run and see if anyone is near them.
Sammy can get to full speed in 2 steps, so he's the least likely person to ever be caught from behind.

I think sammy did because of heat buildup from the tremendous speed he had generated

Sprinters do the same thing when running a race... He looked over his shoulder several times and knew he was in the clear....

Sammy new exactly where their players were.

Sometimes players look over their shoulder, some kind of round into the end zone so they can see who is behind them, and most look at video board if there is one at that end zone. There have been pictures taken of Sammy looking up at the board while he is about to score in Death Valley.

If I remember correctly JD fumbled the ball and ran back to strip it.

Um maybe because sprinting one hundred yards is physically taxing.

It seems to be getting to be an epidemic of not only slowing

down, but trying to time it just right where you barely beat the chasing defender in. The player may not necessarily talk trash or anything either, although that is part of it sometimes. I think it is a really dumb move. I would rather fly into the endzone and Lambeau leap or something, or fly in and Barry Sanders it to the ref and keep heading for the sidelines.

They worry me when they drop the ball too quickly when jogging into the end zone.
