Is Georgia really just a tune-up game?

Just thinking out loud here. Suppose Clemson loses to Georgia (unthinkable, I know), and then runs the table. The ACC champion (with wins over FSU and Scar) would still be in a strong position to claim one of the four playoff spots. However, if Clemson were to lose to either FSU or Scar, they would most likely be eliminated from consideration. FSU is important because the playoff will not be likely to select two ACC teams. Scar is important because a late season loss tends to weigh far more heavily when rankings are determined. Given this scenario, the results of the Georgia game may be irrelevant, at least from a playoff perspective. What say ye?

Absolutely, any time you can play a soft team with a soft defense and offensive line on the road in a quiet environment on the national stage, it's a good way to tuneup for the rigors of playing an ACC type schedule.

Ironically, you are right.

Where better than Georgia to show the cracks in your armor, which is what a tune-up game is all about. Wofford is not going to reveal where your weaknesses lie. Of course, this is not why Georgia was scheduled. It is a rivalry game that fans will really get into. My point is simply that the game does not really matter when it comes to the playoffs. Beat FSU and Scar and Georgia is irrelevant. Lose to FSU or Scar and again, Georgia is irrelevant.

I know, I'm being a little tongue in cheek but I think that it's merely a good test for us that we should win.

Now UGAy could lose this game and take a second spot...

in the playoffs. Clemson can't. The ACC, being though of as the weakest of the power five, won't get it's champion in the playoff with a loss over the others.
I believe we'd be fifth in the line of one loss conference champs.

Wins over FSU, the defending national champion, and Scar, especially if they do well in the SEC would make it awfully hard to leave the ACC champ out. What other conference champ would have two wins over likely top five opponents?

Haha, South Carolina may not even be a top 25 team when we play them.
Prob a 3 to 4 loss team by then.

How do you figure?

The offense is going to be good. The defense lost some key pieces, but unless it completely implodes who on that schedule is really scary?
@Auburn - yes. UGA - maybe, but its in Columbia and UGA has sucked there recently. SC probably wins that game. @Florida - everyone on Tnet thinks they will suck
I'm convinced Texas A&M is gonna be bad this year, Missouri is probably rebuilding, and i still don't have faith in Tennessee. Vandy is gonna suck again without Franklin.
Don't get me wrong i would absolutely love a dumpster fire level implosion from SC this year, but I'm just not seeing it. If i had to bet i would say they are 9-2 coming to DV.

It all depends on how FSU does and how the coastal winner

looks. Say our boys go down and beat FSU then FSU drops a second game. That in isn't as good. If the coastal sends another .500 wonder, that won't help. Best thing is to hope that side sends somebody with no more than one loss.

I don't think I would call it a tune up game but if I had to pick 1 game to lose all year, it would be to Clemson because other than pride, in the long run it wouldn't matter. I would think the same would hold true for you guys. The Big 10 will be the conference that gets left out in a 1 loss scenario, I have already heard the talking heads mention it. Undefeated in the Big 10 or nothing.

last year's final polls too. They seem to not have a clue how this playoff will work. They directly contradict the information distributed by their own networks.

Don't let NFL thinking corrupt the massive importance of each and every Clemson game. A loss is unthinkably bad.
