I don’t care how much Walt talks up DJ..

He sucks, absolutely no vision, stands like a statue in the pocket, stares down his revievers. I was on the band wagon for 4-5 weeks, but he has showed absolutely 0, ZERO, improvement. TP will not be here next year, and its a shame he deserved a full qtr to prove his self.

DJ didn't exhibit any of those bad habits last year, and if you go back and watch his HS film he was much better then as well. He got his head messed up against UGA and hasn't played like he's capable. He will never be Lamar Jackson running the ball, but we don't need him to be. We just need him to play like he's proven capable of playing. Watch Notre Dame from last year... it was a different player.

But how long do we bet on the losing horse, chasing after what he was last year? I agree he was phenomenal last year. I thought we should switch to a vertical passing game (like Bama) and we had a real chance for a title this year (which I did not think last year). But I was wrong. We've had 8 games since those great performances. I agree that UGA seemed to mess up his head. But no matter what the reason is, we can't keep him as our starter based on what he was last year or in high school.

May I interest you in a look at our depth chart at QB? Nothing is changing at least until next year. So best to get behind what we have and hope he finds his mojo again. I still think a lot of his problem is mental and he is getting better as his confidence improves again. Is he where we want to be? Not at all and he knows that. If we keep improving though there’s no reason we can’t win out.

Maybe trying more of a vertical passing game would help him get his mojo back. I understand that it might require keeping TE's and RB's in for protection, but we hardly ever take shots down field this year. I understand that screens get a completion, but do screens for no gain really help his confidence?

I think we did better this game. 9 of our 19 passes were to Ross and Ngata with averages of 14 and 17 and longs of 25 and 29. The problem is we still had a lot of short passes and a couple busted plays for negative yds. I think as our running game continues to improve you will see more passing open up downfield. I’d also like to see them keep Allen in the mix as much as possible. Collins also showed some signs of life today. We just weren’t getting much running game at all before and he was getting pressured/sacked a lot too.

I agree. From what I have read I am in the minority, but I thought when DJ had time that he was much more accurate tonight. I might even be by myself in thinking that the offense can click by the end of the year. As you alluded to, when the defense has to respect one phase of the offense, it opens up other things. I don't really expect it to click because of the o-line, but wouldn't be surprised to see 50+ in any of our last 4 games.

Allot of the problem is Tony Elliott.

led us to 6 straight playoffs, 4 national title games, and 2 national championships with more playoff wins than anyone in the country except Alabama.

The issue with the 2021 offense is execution, from several positions.

I respectfully disagree. Those were different teams with different personnel. A great coach adjusts his playbook to the players he has that year. We actually called and completed a slant pass yesterday. I was ecstatic. I don't remember many others this entire year. Also, how many passes did FSU complete 7 yards down the middle of the field in front of our LB's yesterday? We haven't ran that route all year. No crossing patterns, no drags across the field. Those are all easy throws. Everything is to the outside. Leading our receivers out of bounds. Except for that bubble screen that is good for -4 to +4 yards depending on a WR block. Watch other teams who pass the ball well. Receivers catch the ball in stride across the middle of the field and then get yards after the catch. The only way our receivers get YAC is if they break a tackle. I am giving the receivers we have the benefit of the doubt that they can run a route and gain separation - but how many times have you seen that this year? Is it because they run the same out routes over and over? Why don't we run any plays with our receivers bunched? I think the play calling leaves a lot to be desired. And if the play calling assumes DJ can't throw the ball across the middle of the field - shame on TE. At least give the kid more options for easy completions as mentioned above or even a jet sweep type "throw".

I blame the NIL and that his parents are divorcing. I can't help but think that the money has something to do with it. DJ is not not one of the boys anymore. He's a millionaire and they are lower middle class. Some even poor. It as has to be messing with the morale of his offensive weapons. Mainly receivers. But it looks like they are finally turning the corner albeit 7 weeks too late.

And his parents divorcing has to be messing with his mind. I was 25 when my parents divorced, a grown man and it still bothered me. It messed with my confidence and identity. So, what is a coach to do. Dabo doesn't want to give up on the young man. But in the meantime his play has went from awful to below average and his teammates are suffering. It could hurt recruiting as well. Top talent wants to be in a top offense. Not the 115th offense in the country.

I mostly agree with this (but it seems the divorce thing is just a rumor that gets spread around, I've seen no evidence). The one disagreement is that he's just below average now. His stats have actually gotten worse the past couple weeks. He's among the five worst QBs in the P5 in every single stat except for picks (though he is for turnovers, and in picks he's 17th worst). He's the worst or second worst in a few stats. He has not improved, objectively.

He got NIL money. No drive to get paid at the next level. It really sucks, but is what it is. No doubt he is awful this year. Some will try call you a coot, so what is this: 93rd, 115th, 68th, 108th - looks like the stats of a walk on but nope that would be our starting QB. Add 4 TD to 5 INT (2 pick 6’s) and a critical fumble for 6. Of you can be this bad and not give anyone else a try, nothing will. Just hope he can get it figured out before next year.

Do you really believe that? Do you think whatever drop in the bucket NIL money he’s gotten (which may not last) begins to compare to any of the contracts our drafted players have received in recent years?

Exactly. He is hoping to make a half billion or more one day. He is giving it his all and is just not good at this point. He is giving 100%.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

We are trying to have designed runs for him with the pass option as well. It's a flawed system for him. It's as if we are trying to run it with a guy like Byron Leftwich. It will never work. It's like he has 2 downs to get it done, because we waste a play every 3 plays before we have to punt.

The QB run

Oct 31, 2021, 10:08 AM

Is effective when the defense has to account for him running the ball. Makes them keep an extra guy in the box at times. But, DJ is so slow defenses can just run him down. They don't have to keep an extra guy in there.

You need to update your stats. It's now: 108th (accuracy), 91st (yards), 124th (ypa), 123rd (TDs), and 117th (rating). These don't look like the stats of a walk-on. There are a couple walkons starting now. Both are better than him. The only QB that's clearly worse than him is Will Plummer.

I hate to say it, but right now he would not even get any looks for the draft if he were eligible. If he doesn't improve a bundle next year, any aspirations of playing in the NFL are out the window. He just doesn't seem to have the instincts that good quarterbacks have. I hope I am completely wrong, as he is a fine young man, but that alone will not get you to the next level.

I agree with your assessment of where he is currently and draft prospects if he doesn’t improve. That being said he’s shown potential last year and occasionally this year. I still wonder how much of the problem is mental. I understand that both he and Bresee have gone through some stuff personally and with family this year. You add that to the stress of being The Guy and that’s a lot on a 19-20 yo. Stress can totally mess with your thought processes and even physically.

Dabo seems to still think he’s trying. So I hope he’s able to turn it around. We’ll see.

He can throw a pretty good ball on the first read

[3]
Oct 31, 2021, 1:45 AM

if the receiver hits the route perfectly and nothing messes up with the blocking. But he absolutely cannot go to a second or third option and can't improvise at all when something breaks down.

That was something Watson was a natural master at and something Trevor got better at and became pretty good at over time.

DJ seems completely lost in those situations. And yeah you can blame the O line and WRS to some extent but ultimately it us up to the QB to be great and bring the level of the offense up in such situations.

One of the worst QB’s I’ve ever seen. I was on the bandwagon as well until I caught myself and realized real players that are gonna make it show some improvement, it may be steady or come in flashes, but he hasn’t shown any. He doesn’t have everything it takes to play QB. He is the type guy that can get by on his arm at Juco but will never advance.

He is a recruiting bust. It happens. He does not have the mettle to be an elite college QB.

I agree, it does happen. The difference is our coaches can’t move on. And i have to believe the transfer portal is part of the reason. Afraid he’ll be a cry baby and just leave. Which I believe he would. I don’t think he has the character to fight and win it back, if he was benched.
