One of my happiest memories as a youngin was a train trip to Atlanta.

The schedule, the rumble of the tracks, and the food car always keeps me mystified!

Greenville to OKC a couple of years ago. Fell in love with it. Planning another one in early 2022. [BTW, it took a week because you can't go from here to OKC. Here to DC, DC to Chicago, Chicago to Ft Worth, Ft Worth to OKC. The trip home was OKC to Ft Worth, Ft Worth to New Orleans (spent a couple days there), New Orleans to Greenville. We did to enjoy the time away from everything.]

For one accustomed to the hassle of airlines, the train was a dream. It's like TSA does't even exist. With a roomette or room meals are included, the food is surprisingly good. The ride is whisper quiet and smooth, the view from the picture windows is incredible. Showers and restrooms were very easy to use. We read, talked about stuff we wouldn't otherwise talk about, just unwound.

If you need to go somewhere anyway, it is way worth the extra time. If you just want to go somewhere and love getting there, its the only way to go. Do it.

Edit: you said cross country. We're thinking about taking the Chicago to Seattle route, north along the Canadian border. Supposed to be incredible. Then maybe to LA and home from there.

This one is Greenville to New Orleans then to LA

Coming back is more expensive having to swap trains in Chicago and DC. Probably could move the dates to get the cheaper run back, but going a different route back is intriguing. Right now it’s nearly a $3k round trip ticket for 2 people.

Right. Matching dates and schedules is a thing. And yes, its

more expensive than two airline tix. If the objective is to get there and back, is not worth the extra time/money. But if the extra days on the train are part of the trip, after accounting for the airline tix you didn't buy, its not that expensive.

Columbia. Same line. I sat in coach, cause I was a junior enlisted Marine and broke, but wanted to take a train trip. Not much to look at scenery wise. But the smoking car had some interesting people to talk to throughout the trip.
