TNET: Steve Spurrier on DJ Uiagalelei: "Dabo's got him another good one on the way"

Steve Spurrier on DJ Uiagalelei: "Dabo's got him another good one on the way"

Not every young quarterback gets a little one-on-one time with the Head Ball Coach, but Clemson quarterback D.J. Uigalelei did just that last week. Longtime Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier was one of the coaches on Uiagalelei’s team at the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii and coached the Tigers’ 2020 quarterback commit and mid-year enrollee. As if he needed them coots hating him anymore than they already do.

This is what I don't understand about the coot fan base. Steve Spurrier led them to 3 straight 11-2 win seasons. No other HC in the history of coot FB had ever won 11 games in a season, and Spurrier did it 3 straight seasons, and he had a winning season in all but 1 of the 10 season he was their full time HC, and that 1 season was a 6-6 .500 season.

The coots only had ONE 4 straight wins against Clemson in 1951, 52, 53, and 54, and that was the only time the coots ever come close to the 7 straight wins Clemson had against the coots until Steve Spurrier. Under HC Steve Spurrier the coots won 5 straight against Clemson. And that coot fanbase hates Steve Spurrier more than any of the loser Head Coaches in the history of their FB program. But Why? Spurrier done them a favor by coming there to coach a FB that had never won more than 10 games in a season, and they only done that once in 1984 under HC Joe Morrison.

Under Steve Spurrier, they finished the season ranked in the Top 10 AP poll 3 times, and never in the history of that program had a HC other than Steve Spurrier ever finished a season ranked in the Top 10 AP poll, and they hate the man with a passion, go figure, bc they knew he was at the end of his coaching career when they hired him. They actually hired a HC that was only a few years from being put out to pasture bc Spurrier only had several good years left in him, and they should be praising the Ole Ball Coach for leaving them with a better history than they had before he got there!!!

Since Spurrier left the coots and retired from being a college HC, Clemson has won 6 straight against the coots, and I believe that 2020 will be the year that Clemson ties the 7 straight win streak over the coots again.

I never liked Steve Spurrier even before he went to coach the coots, but I did learn to respect him while he was with the coots. Since he has been gone from USUC, I've even started to like the ole fart a little, but mostly I do respect him as being one of the best ever college FB coaches!!!

I don't know who started that 'old ball coach' crap, but I hate it more than just about anything. Just stop with the old ball coach nonsense. It's annoying as hell.
Spurrier had a lot of talent at Florida and he only won one title. That's kind of telling to me. Maybe somebody with a few more championships should be the old ball coach and not Spurrier.

Steve Spurrier ended up being one of the best coaches in college football history, like it or not. Coots best success against us is when he was the coach. As a matter of fact, I think it's fair to say that was the golden age of coot football history, which ain't necessarily saying much. :) And of course, he had great success at Florida and even elevated Duke the short time he was there. I would not poo poo his thoughts about D.J. If he says Dabo's got another good one in the pipeline, I take that as a sign of more great stuff to come. GooooooTigers!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a Spurrier fan but I won't knock him
when he is bragging on our future QB. He may
have won just one Natty and that's one more
than a bunch of good coaches, but he knows
talent, especially QB talent.

Ignorant take, origin of the nickname: years ago, while being praised as an offensive genius, during an interview replied, "I'm just a ball coach". Also, when speaking about "football" tended to use only the word "ball" when referencing the sport.

YEAH YEAH I KNOW

Jan 23, 2020, 8:50 AM

But the fact of the matter is, HBC knows his stuff. Really cool DJ got some coaching from him and he had a lot of kind words to say. I'm getting really excited; our future is bright and orange!

He's also right about Natty's; it's almost impossible to go back-to-back especially when the other guy has the best passing season in NCAA history. But it's good LSU won now, because their tight window SLAMMED shut with nine juniors and two coordinators leaving. Our window? It's jammed open. If you want to win the playoffs, you KNOW you're gonna have to get through us.

I agree, I think Spurrier knows something about quarterbacking. I'd say he more than anyone created the modern pass happy offenses we see in the college game these days.

Re: I couldn’t stand Spurrier when he was here in Cola

I think what killed Spurrier at scar was that he meant absolutely everything in recruiting.

The good players he signed only signed on so they could play for a hall of fame coach.

I think at first it stroked his ego, but I think he got tired of having to be so involved and such a key part of convincing every single decent player to come play for him.

Sure Dabo is a good closer and works recruiting as hard as any head coach, but I think there are a lot of elite players that he spends limited time with because some players are heavily focused on their coordinator or position coach being their main draw to Clemson.

Spurrier didn't have that luxury, and he ended up just packing it in and moving on.

The coots love to burn him for leaving mid season, but he would have left before the season if they hadn't begged him and begged him to stay on for one more year.

Re: I couldn’t stand Spurrier when he was here in Cola

Jan 23, 2020, 6:37 PM

That is the absolute truth bc he did try and tell them that he had enough, but they wouldn't take NO for an answer. By the time fall ball had come back around, he didn't want a thing to do with being a HC anymore, and he done what he should have done before they begged him to stay, and they did beg him. And that interrupted his Schlitz drinking time!!!!

Glad he feels that way about DJ, makes me feel even better about our future. I respect his opinion, other than his time as Redskins coach he has been a winner everywhere he has been.

However, he had too many nice things to say about DJ.

He must be getting softer in his later years.....

Had a good run at cooterville, but we shouldn't forget that he "quit" his beloved coots right before the Clemson game. Takes a real man to do that.

Spurrier can spot QB talent for sure. But I for one am glad he had very little time to coach our future QB. Spurrier's ego usually got in the way of his QBs reaching their full potential. The QBs on Spurrier 's teams that perform bested for him was the ones that the old ball coach let his coordinators do most of the teaching and play calling. All of them spent too much time picking themselves up after Spurrier dragged them over coals after each game to the media instead of handling it behind closed doors and on the Practice field. That is Spurrier's biggest weakness. He didn't know how to stop putting his players down in his press conferences. They wanted to play for him because the Media coverage on any team he was coaching was huge, while the waited for the next smart mouth line to spring from his mouth. This increased the eyes on them in what they hope would help further their careers. But the downside was you knew you where going to get slammed in the media if you made a mistake. He very rarely had his players back if you made him look bad as a coach.

Steve Spurrier is one of my favorite CFB coaches ever. His constant barbs at FSU, UGA (sometimes) Miami were great. There will never be another like him. His career is worth a movie.

The lack of an elite QB at USCe is what held him back from even greater success. Best coach and best years they will ever have.

It was good to see him on the sideline at the Poly game and good to hear his comments on DJ.

Don't ever think for one minute the Old Ball Coach has gone soft. If anything, he will become more blunt and salty than ever. He meant what he said.
