Honestly, The wheels started coming off in 2019

Oct 23, 2021, 10:37 PM

TL and ETN, 2 generational talents, made us look better than what we were against the mediocre ACC. We were, however, exposed in the playoffs by LSU and OSU. Failure to learn and make corrections from those blowouts has lead to the complete meltdown that is this season.

There were numerous times every game where my brother

and I would look at each-other and talk about how bad the play calling was. Then ETN or Trevor would do something special and it wouldn’t matter.

Tony is NOT a good play caller. He may be a good coach and great man….then move him to assistant coach and far away from play calling.

Agreed. We have exceeded despite him. And Jeff Scott leaving has left him exposed.

But dabos stupid loyalty will be the true issue. The best is standard unless it comes to challenging him then he knows best. Vanity is a bad look Dabo..

I'm still not buying this "Jeff Scott was the offensive genius"

And the doors fell off when all our playmakers left after last season and the axles fell off when Ohio State trashed our defense for over 600 yards last year.

I couldn’t agree more. Against LSU

Oct 24, 2021, 12:51 AM

and Ohio State, we looked woefully unprepared - and that was with Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne in the lineup. I knew there were problems, but I didn’t see *this* meltdown coming. Yes, we’re pretty banged up - but that wasn’t the case against Georgia, and the offense wasn’t appreciably better then.

I don't think unprepared is the right word for the LSU game

Oct 24, 2021, 4:33 AM

don't forget we had a 14-3 lead in that game and had chances to get back in it. I think that loss was more of a case of just being worn down by one of the best offenses ever.

Just being honest

Oct 24, 2021, 8:22 AM

but to say the wheels began falling off in a National Championship game is a bit over the top. Even in a playoff game last year. We were just beat in both games. Period.

Now this year, the wheels have definitely come off. But I do believe Dabo knows how to change the tires

It really didn't when you look at it. Many of the problems were on defense and were corrected. If AJ Terrell breaks up a couple of passes or Skalski doesn't get kicked out for targeting, we beat LSU. The interior OL was a problem on offense, specifically center last year. The center issues have continued this year. This year that is compounded by terrible QB play. DJ doesn't feel and react to pressure and has no touch on his passes. The coaching staff up to this point has treated him as a sacred cow and the lack of accountability has festered throughout the offense. Now receivers drop passes, no big deal, linemen miss blocks, no big deal...The two guys that touch the ball every play on offense is why this offense has been so bad.

Clemson lost to LSU and OSU because of the defense, not the offense.

I honestly feel that this is pretty accurate.

LSU and Ohio State had "generational talent"

Oct 24, 2021, 8:50 AM

those years as well. I think sometimes when we self assess our own struggles, we fail to acknowledge the greatness of others.

Burrow and Fields were as unique to those programs as Trevor and ETN were to ours. The hard truth of the matter is that it was Clemson's defense, not offense, that kept us from being good enough to win those games...but part of that lay at the hands and feet of two great QB's who had immense weapons at their disposal.

Hard to argue wheels are not off now. But to align that by saying it started happening in the Superdome vs. LSU is off base, IMO.

And more importantly, does not give credit to those two teams (LSU and OSU) who were simply incredible.

This is 100% true When the Scott’s left our offense started down and was carried only with those two generational players ETN never had a hole to run thru He had to make his own way

Bingo!! This is not an overnight problem and not an overnight fix! This started in 19 and probably will take 2-3 years to fix! Dabo will do what’s best for the program! But at least we can stay entertained for 60 minutes this year, instead of 15 a game!

Although I agree that thinks started going down hill before this year, I don't think that it started until 2020. LSU was one game and like a couple have said that can't be pinned solely on the offense.

Last year however, Etienne, went from averaging 8 yards per carry to 5. Despite what people think of Lyn-J his statistics had a similar drop. Short yardage situations were even worse. If you can't run the ball then it becomes increasingly difficult to cover up deficiencies.

Have to agree with this. Since we wiped the floor with Alabama in the NC game look what has happened to them and then look what has happened to us. Saban has done a better job of fixing weaknesses despite all of his coaching losses and changes. Dabo has not. Sad to say.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.
