Augusta adds two female members

Aug 20, 2012, 11:17 AM

Condi Rice and Darla Moore.

Afraid so

Aug 20, 2012, 11:20 AM

I think Hootie Johnson was instrumental in getting Moore in.

I wouldn't have announced this

Aug 20, 2012, 11:27 AM

I'd have just done it quietly and then waited for some twit to raise another stink like Burke did. then you point out the baselessness of their argument and laugh while they scraped the egg off their face.

Re: I wouldn't have announced this

As expected, that a** clown Martha Burk was quick to take credit. According to the A.P. story (tried to cut/paste with no luck), Burk said, "Oh my God. We won. It's about 10 years too late for the boys to come into the 20th century, never mind the 21st century. But it's a milestone for women in business." Now, maybe Burk will move on to more vital and touchingly sensitive issues like freeing Julian Assange.

They were kind of the last standing non-PC establishment in america. I loved the fact that they didn't allow themselves to be bullied. Oh well. At least it was on their timetable.

At least they did it right...these are two women who are deserving of the honor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed

Aug 20, 2012, 11:40 AM

I'm glad Hootie didn't back down in 2002 and they waited to do it the right way.

Still shocking to me that it happened at all though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Can't argue with that.***

Have you been smoking crack? Hootie Johnson was a disaster as the Chairman of Augusta National. He was asked to step down and never would have been appointed as Chairman to begin with except for the fact that Jack Stephens lobbied for him.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By $CU standards, that would be considerd above average.***

of all 18 holes

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Allowed network coverage

Aug 20, 2012, 1:59 PM

That would have been a decision of the club's Executive Committee, but it's possible that Johnson raised the issue and advocated that coverage be expanded.

Hootie was a real visionary....

for advocating something that every other televised PGA event has been doing for decades.

Ah the value of an $CU education.

Re: Hootie was a real visionary....

Aug 20, 2012, 2:36 PM

The only reason Hootie became Chairman was because of Jack Stephens. Stephens was beloved by all the members and considered the best Chairman the club ever had. Stephens and Hootie were friends, and when Stephens had to step down because of health reasons, he lobbied the Excutive Committee to give the job to Hootie. Out of respect for Stephens, Hootie was made Chairman. I was told by a member of the club that Hootie wouldn't have had a chance in hell of getting the job except for that.

Re: Hootie was a real visionary....

Aug 20, 2012, 2:55 PM

Thats not only shortsighted but mostly incorrect.

A chairman at augusta doesnt stay on for years as a favor for anyone

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not smart

Aug 20, 2012, 2:53 PM [ in reply to Hootie was a real visionary.... ]

Pga events do a lot of things augusta refuses to do

Thats why augusta is special

Its knowing what and when that makes the difference-

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is nothing special....

Aug 20, 2012, 3:07 PM

about a short-sighted decision not to televise the play through the front nine. As Augusta soon discovered, it is something they should have been doing all along because it only further enhanced the interest in the tournament.

Impossible to know now

Aug 21, 2012, 8:44 AM

There are plenty of people that believe the decision not to televise the front for so long-

enhanced the excitement when it was covered.

Plus, there was a tradition involved- and Augusta doesn't change just because "other PGA events" do something different.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hootie Johnson did that when he got Lou Holtz in.***

That Hootie is a blowfish. When Augusta let Holtz and Bill Gates in, then I knew they were ruining a great club. Hootie's leadership sucked IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can you cite some specifics on

Aug 20, 2012, 3:00 PM

What "sucked" about it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Can you cite some specifics on

Aug 20, 2012, 3:20 PM

You mean like devising a formula that would have prevented prior champions like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer from competing. He backed off that pretty quick after his stupidity was exposed.

You mean like planting unneeded trees all over the course. Nicklaus was quoted as saying that every other course in the world was pruning trees while Augusta was planting them.

You mean like the incompetent manner in which he handled the entire Martha Burk situation, a blunder that resulted in the club foregoing advertisement revenue for two years.

How much more do you need to demonstrate that Johnson is an idiot?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here are some specifics for you - from 2 people that

know Hootie well- and have covered him for decades

http://www.thestate.com/2012/08/21/2407229/former-augusta-national-chairman.html

Stubborn? Without question, friend and foe agreed. Someone who didn’t like being told what to do, especially by outsiders? Hoo boy, was that ever on target.

But bigoted? I heard from insiders how Hootie led the movement to invite Ron Townsend — the club’s first black member — in 1990. Those who knew him from business and from projects to improve his home state (including helping end school segregation) couldn’t imagine him clinging to outdated ideas. Too, they noted, he wasn’t necessarily calling the shots at Augusta National; he had 300 other wealthy, powerful, opinionated men to answer to as well.

As chairman, Hootie never backed down from his no-women stance. But he didn’t crow after Burk’s attempts fizzled. “I don’t feel like we won anything,” he said at the 2004 Masters. “I think it’s over, but — it will never be ‘over,’ but I don’t think we’ve won anything.”

the smoke in the room is too thick for you.
