Ranking the CFP national champions

Jan 13, 2022, 10:42 AM

tainted or not. I'm a little biased, but I'm gonna do it anyway since this is TigerNet.

1. 2019 LSU - have to give it to them since they went 15-0 and beat 7 top 10 teams along the way and had an excellent offense and pretty good defense.

2. 2018 Clemson - the first 15-0 team; say what you want about the regular season schedule, but Clemson was the only CFP champ to beat 2 undefeated teams in the playoffs and beat Notre Dame by 27 points and beat "the greatest team of all time" by 28 points.

3. 2020 Alabama - It was a Covid year and most teams played in conference only regular season schedules, but the Tide was the only other undefeated champ at 13-0 and had an incredible offense with a Heisman WR and 1st round QB, RB, OL, and 2 WRs.

4. 2016 Clemson - went 14-1 and beat 5 ranked teams and broke Alabama's 26 game winning streak in either the best or second best CFP final. After a slow start in the game, the offense was awesome and the defense played well enough. The one hiccup was the November 1 point loss to Pittsburg who finished the season 8-5.

5. 2015 Alabama - after an early loss to Ole Miss, the tide won 12 straight and beat 8 ranked teams during the season.

6 to 8 are too close to call but I'll try

6. 2014 Ohio State - they beat 5 ranked teams and put up 42 points on Alabama and Oregon in the playoffs with their backup QB which says a lot about their overall team strength. But they also had and odd early season 14 point loss at home to Virginia Tech who finished the season 7-6.

7. 2021 UGA - The defense was excellent, but the offense was kind of meh and even boring at times. UGA beat 6 ranked teams including the team that beat them by 17 in the SECCG with 500+ yards and 41 points on that vaunted defense. So a team that didn't win their conference and lost it in that fashion can't be one of the top CFP champs, sorry.

8. 2017 Alabama - Beat UGA in maybe the best CFP final, but didn't win the SEC or even the SEC West and didn't play in the SECCG and lost the last regular season game to Auburn, who also beat UGA in the regular season. There was even questions as to whether the Tide should have even been in the playoffs

#4 and #5 are interchangeable. UGA fans wouldn't like this but well you know, this is TigerNet. They can make their own pole on Dawgnation or w/e site they don't seem to spend as much time on as they do here to get ego stroking self congratulatory pats on the back. And Alabama fans don't seem to come on here much if at all. Feel free to rearrange.

I would love to see the 2016 Clemson team face the 2018 Clemson team. I know 2016 had one loss, but I think 2016 team would beat 2018 4 out of 5 times. Guess we will have to wait for EASports to make NCAA Football again to find out.

I will take our 81 team with all it's physical, All pro, Hall of Fame players against 16 or 18.

I believe that a healthy, motivated 2015 Clemson beats both***

Works for me, but the best CFP NC games.....

I would probably say that our 2016 team produced the best CFP GAME yet (as best as I can remember the others, anyway). That was a heckuva finish, whether you're a Clemson fan or not.

The UGa Pick-6 this year was a great way to win the championship, but Bama was down by 8 at that time, and really the Pick-6 interrupted what could have been an incredible finish, more so than being an incredible finish itself.

Probably the 2nd best finish was the Bama-UGa OT game - you gotta put any OT game in the top 2 or 3 of great games.

I'd say 3rd was our loss to Bama in our first CFP showing. As Maxwell Smart would say, "Missed it by 'that much'."

Agree on LSU as they were by far the most talented team I have seen in years and years. It is hard to have any list going back years in any sport because the game changes. Is Tiger better than Jack for example? Golf balls and clubs are so different now, you cannot compare.

2018 Clemson vs 2019 LSU could've gone down as the greatest game in college football history. Both programs were only one year off from that happening.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.
