I'm not a fan of the direction college football is heading

Dec 15, 2021, 5:14 PM

The NCAA has been making rules that benefit great football players at the expense of the rest of the athletes. Much like college basketball I think the NCAA will soon get rid of the 3 years to go pro rule. Players like Trevor and Bryce Young have proven that some players are ready to play in the NFL after 1 year and with all the developmental programs and camps for high school athletes that's going to continue.

After that a minor league or other alternative to college ball will develop and gain popularity. After all if you are good enough to be in the NFL why bother wasting time with classes if you are going to leave before graduating. As a result there will be less talent and fan connection with college football and the sport will become less popular.

Now for the cherry on top. A lot of athletic departments rely on football to stay out of the red (including Clemson). What happens when football is no longer making enough money to keep other sports afloat? Other sports will be shutdown and some schools could give up athletics completely. Once again only benefitting few and damaging many.

Maybe I'm overreacting but could this be where we see college sports in 10 - 20 years?

I believe 3 yr rule is NFL, not NCAA

The rule as I understand... must be 3 years removed from HS to be draft eligible.

This rule is pretty vulnerable to legal attack. It is arguably age discrimination. It is just a matter of time before someone not getting enough NIL money figures this out and sues.

It's collective bargaining with the NFLPA

and the rule has been unsuccessfully challenged before. At this point, there is no reason to think there is any legal weakness.

The 3-year rule is what's keeping college football afloat. NIL and the transfer portal are just small bumps in the road.

If CFB follows basketball and goes to 1 year instead of 3 years, we can truly kiss the sport goodbye. The good thing is the current NFL/NFLPA CBA lasts until 2030.

We should be good until then.

Cheers,

Having said that, I share concern about trajectory

It's entirely possible, schools are simply "lending" their name to what amounts to NFL minor league within next 10 years.

NCAA has been poorly led thus where we are today...leadership could have done much better. They could have done many things to prevent current environment AND made it much better for all the athletes!

I don't think you're overreacting.***

It is getting to the point of not investing any money or time into. College football is losing its spark for me and I have be obsessed with it for 40 plus years .

I will always pull for the Tigers but you’re right about the money. After 25 years of giving to Iptay, I’m afraid I’m done.
