Perhaps we are just unfortunate...

Nov 15, 2014, 8:31 PM

Think about it. Quarterbacks Deshaun Watson (as far as we know), Chad Kelly, and Tony McNeal have all torn their ACL's while at Clemson (two occurred in spring games). McNeal had to leave football for medical purposes and Kelly's behavior was so unacceptable that Dabo was forced to dismiss him. Earlier today, I fully blamed Dabo for the staggering lack of depth at the quarterback position. Perhaps I was too hard on Coach Swinney. You can recruit all the quarterbacks in the world, but they have to be healthy (and sane) enough to play.

Imagine, God forbid, that Watson gets hurt again and that Kelly Bryant and Tucker Israel suffer major injuries next year, forcing Nick Schuessler to be our starter and only hope at quarterback. Is Dabo responsible for such a paucity in depth?

It appears that Coach Dabo is facing a rash of adverse, unexpected situations with his quarterbacks once they arrive on campus. After you get them on campus, you must hope that they can physically and mentally sustain the rigor and pressure of college athletics. Swinney just hasn't had such fortune outside Tajh Boyd and Cole Stoudt. Fortunately for us, Boyd produced on the field.

I hope you are either kidding or retarded.

I await your points to counter my argument.

We told both Kelly and Watson that we wouldn't recruit any other QBs if they committed their year. That is why we have no depth. Make them come in and earn it rather than promise them the job before they step on campus.

Also, if all QBs got injured next year (like 0.1% chance of happening), I don't think anyone would blame Dabo. The fact that we have stood behind Cole this long and continued to milk his fragile confidence is pathetic.

Thanks for your counterargument....

You make a good point about the promises that Dabo supposedly gave to talented high school quarterbacks to convince them to commit to Clemson. Tommy Bowden did the same for Will Korn, which didn't work out too well for us. However, how often do programs make such promises to four- and five-star talents? If Dabo is doing what is typical of major programs, I don't think he can be faulted for it. No? Recruiting is a brutal battle these days, with programs offering princely promises, kickbacks, and luxurious facilities for the best athletes.

I bet the only promise Saban is throwing out is National Championships and I don't see them hurting for talent.

Nov 15, 2014, 9:09 PM [ in reply to I await your points to counter my argument. ]

2011 - 3 QBs taken - Stoudt, Morgan Roberts, and Tony McNeal (really wiffed on all 3)
2012 - 1 QB - Kelly (promised him no more)
2013 - 0 QB
2014 - 1 QB - Watson (promised him no more)

2 QBs in 3 years with one QB out of the program from 2011 for Medical reasons and another transferred out tells me we need to take more QBs.

Any more points you want me to make?

Your points have sufficiently disproved my theory....

Nov 15, 2014, 9:20 PM

In short, in recent years, Dabo has made huge, self-limiting promises to, not one, but two high-level quarterbacks while only recruiting three other guys who were average at best. So, now, we are stuck with absolutely no depth at the position. Thank you for these points.

It's almost funny. I have been hard on Dabo since 2008 and, after finally giving him the benefit of the doubt, I am proven wrong.

A few more for sh!ts and giggles

2010 - 0 QB
2009 - 1 QB (Tajh)

So that is a total of 6 QBs in 5 years. Pretty sweet and poor recruiting.

his fault for not putting Schuessler in instead of Stout***
