New Story: One For the Ages: I Don't Believe What I Just Saw

One For the Ages: I Don't Believe What I Just Saw

Clemson's emotional win over Louisville Saturday night had all of the elements of a great game: great players, a raucous crowd and enough drama for a lifetime. It lived up to the hype and left everybody - including the media - wondering what they'd just witnessed. Full Story »

Clover65 trust me when I say after 54 years of being dedicated through my heart where I hold my love for Clemson and Clemson FB. My love for Clemson FB first bc as 10 year old I didn't understand the academic side of Clemson that I didn't come to love until about 15 -20 years ago bc it had just been for me about Clemson FB that I have loved seems like forever. But like you I have seen my share of great Clemson FB games, and I can't remember bc of so many years have passed by, how many games I may have missed during my very younger years, but I don't feel that it's been very many that I haven't seen from being in DV, or the TV, and many that was only on the radio with the voice of Jim Phillips was the good ole days.

Last nights game was without doubt for me one of the most emotional and stressful ups and downs for me mentally. At the end when the fans was doing what I myself have done many times of going out on the field congratulating our coaches and players over a win, or expressing my sorrow over a loss and saying how we would get them the next time. But after this win had been finale, I sit in my recliner not being able to utter a word. My wife ask me did you win, every time I tried to speak I would get choked up and couldn't say a word bc I knew I would break down crying from being so happy, or break down bc we come so close to losing a very hard fought game that I believe our defense surely deserved winning bc they gave everything they had to give, and thinking about just how close that it was, and how close that our guys could have been heartbroken after giving it their all, all in literally was a hard thought for me to have for our guys. I don't know how many games like this one that my old heart can hold up to bc this one felt different for me than any I can remember. Our guys actually snatched a victory from the grips of defeat. After having time to think about the game, games like the game last night is for those young at heart. Go Tigers, the hard work that our guys has put in after the Bama game, did pay the bills for last nights victory....

I didn't have the pleasure of attending any games

Oct 2, 2016, 5:04 PM [ in reply to Re: I would say so myself after 51 years of attending games ]

in person until my freshman year in 1965 and that first game was most memorable as it marked the end to one long (and one of the last of its kind) Rat Season. We had many great games during my time there but, as you say, my heart could take the ups and downs of close games much better than it seems to these days. I relish the fact that I was sitting on the third row of the upper deck of the North Stands to see such a battle last night. On a side note, I was proud of the younger fans around me as they treated nearby fans of the opposing team with respect as they too had to deal with similar emotions as you and I felt as the momentum of the game changed.

I love hearing these stories of Clemson fans that have been dedicated for decades. Our daughter came to Clemson from Boston in 2010. We have bled orange ever since. We try to make at least one home game a year. Being at the ND game last year was one the best experiences despite the hurricane. We will be supporting Clemson at BC this Friday night. We are Clemson fans for life and hopefully I'll be writing posts like yours decades from today! Go Tigers!

Yep, I was born into a Baseball family where I didn't know a thing of FB until 4th 5th grade. My best friend at that time, his parents were Clemson grads, and that's when I was introduced to Clemson FB in DV, and Clemson FB has been in my blood as a fan ever since. I really like other sports, but FB is a love for me, Clemson FB that is. When I hear some of these guys talk about if you wasn't a Clemson grad that you couldn't be a "true" Clemson fan. I say they can't be a true Clemson fan until they have loved Clemson FB fan half as long as I have. There is no way that I could register for class and get educated at Clemson to make me love Clemson FB anymore than I already do.

I was right there with you brother, fighting back the tears of unbridled joy. I've been a fan for 41 years now and experienced some heartbreaking losses. However I have to say that having become accustomed to winning consistently again like we have has made these close games a really an emotional overload situation. A full day later and Im just now collecting myself back to normal, didn't sleep much at all last night.....waaayyy too wound up.

Awesome post, I have 30 years of DV games and a Clemson degree under my belt and I felt the same way standing in the stadium watching our fans storm the field after such a thrilling game. Go Tigers!!

Re: What i saw was

Oct 2, 2016, 4:23 PM

just unreal. When everything seemed lost then "mo" switched sides. It's one that will be remembered for a long time. I will give BV credit when he said he felt bad about his 2nd half defense calling. I believe the OC's should share the same sentiment for a disaster in the 3rd quarter play calling and going into the fourth quarter. It seems to be a pattern of trying to protect a lead instead of keeping your foot in it. To try and say that you are calling plays depending on what the defense gives you and what the situation is just doesn't hold water. Case in point is the touchdown the Tigers scored just before halftime. The defense plays with an attacking style, the offense can do the same if you don't hold them back. There are a lot of positives that came out of this game and the one that showed up was the offensive line. This game may very well serve as the launching pad to what can be. That was how you play a game with "no regrets".

Re: What i saw was

Oct 2, 2016, 4:44 PM

NO! NO....NO...NO! The 3rd quarter changed on one play...ONE. PLAY. Ray-Ray didn't concentrate and compromised the team. Nothing more. That's how this game and momentum work. It's not always what the other team does...you can compete with yourself, which is what happened. I give credit to L'ville for seizing the moment, but leave no doubt, Clemson kicked open the door time and time and time again. And against anyone other than LJ, it likely wouldn't have mattered. A lot of young men left their souls on the grass last night...and we fans had a blast of entertainment.

By the way...and for the record...not once did I think Clemson would lose. My only thought was, alright DW4, this is why you came to Clemson...now show the people. He and his teammates did.

Louisville..win out! It's time to shut the mouths of pundits elsewhere and you're part of delivering that message. Do it!

yes the interception was unfortunate BUT, in the entire 3rd quarter the Tigers ran 12 plays total. I saw poor play calling that almost killed the defense. The killer instinct was alive and well in the 2nd quarter but regressed to begin the 2nd half. No fault of the players.

That's what turnovers do...especially the self-inflicted ones.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Play calling how about turnovers???? Without those

Oct 2, 2016, 4:50 PM [ in reply to Re: What i saw was ]

turnovers it would not have been close.

David Hood...

Oct 2, 2016, 5:06 PM

You say the crowd was in it the whole game. The announcers were talking about how the crowd was dead the 2nd half. Since i couldn't make it, can you set things straight?

Go Tigers!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was told at church today that the announcers said

Oct 2, 2016, 5:11 PM

that, but I was there and the only times it got quiet was when the fans had to take breaks between plays near the end of the game. Don't think we "were dead" but just needed a little resuscitation due to exhaustion after some big plays that marked the changes in momentum. We sure weren't dead on the final 4 plays of the game - just ask Louisville.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I attended last night and just watched the tv broadcast

Oct 2, 2016, 10:23 PM

The announcers started talking about how quiet the crowd was during one of our possessions in the 3rd quarter. OF COURSE we are going to be quieter when we have the ball. As soon as Louisville took possession, the noise amped right back up.

I think they continued that line of dialog as Louisville came roaring back, but having been in the stadium and then seeing it on TV, I think the crowd maintained its intensity the whole game. My voice - along with my wife's and kids' voices - sure sounds like We did!
