Go big

Jul 5, 2022, 10:37 PM

Merger ACC and PAC 12 with ND and 4 Big 12 schools ….. create a truly super conference name.

As you know the old regional stuff is out the window; it is all what product can you provide for TV. The Big Ten, even with new SEC, will be in a good spot so they can sit tight or add a little if they want. It is the ACC, PAC 12 and remaining Big 12 that need a big time game changer. For once it is time to go big and even out do the SEC. Even it does not work you can always break it up, as we have seen conferences fall apart all the time. You know how the contracts would need to read, etc. So here it goes:

ACC/ PAC Northeast
Notre Dame
UVA
VT
Pitt
WVA
BC
Cuse
Louisville

ACC Southeast
Clemson
Miami
FSU
UNC
NC State
WF
GT
Duke

ACC southwest
BYU
Baylor
Utah
Colorado
Ok state
Texas tech
TCU
Kansas State

ACC West
Oregon
Oregon state
Washington
Washington state
Arizona
Stanford
Arizona state
CAL

-For Clemson 7 games a year are still "regional" and easy to travel to. Actually schedule is better as get Miami and UNC every year unlike now. I will easily trade those two for Cuse and BC

-for an incredible TV ratings and big contract you have a league "playoff". Winner of Northeast plays winner of Southeast in Charlotte. Winners of Southwest and West playoff semi-final in California/Arizona withConference Championship in Dallas. Clemson vs. Oregon conference title would rival SEC Championship.

-This playoff scenario may only mean you can play 10 games but so what, 10 games of great product. Play a 9 game conference slate and leave one spot for rival games. You play you 7 Division foes then kind of like ACC/Big Ten basketball challenge you kind of set matchups before season starts. Clemson v. Washington

Again it may mean long travel for one or two games a year but so what for the match-ups produced.

-You could create a mini "NCAA Tournament" for Conference Basketball tournament. Top three teams from each division make tournament along with 4 at large spots. So 16 team b-ball tournament. UNC, Duke, Baylor Cuse, UVA, Arizona is a tournament that would have incredible ratings. (who cares about the ACC tournament now, it not what is was before NCAA went to 64 teams. Most teams if they win it nice but really playing for NCAA). This tournament set-up is must see TV

So what if only half the league makes tournament, the SEC does not allow all baseball teams to make SEC baseball tournament.

Same thing for baseball. Top 3 in each division, 4 at large. Arizona, Stanford, UVA, FSU, Arizona State, OK. State, TCU....like a mini college World Series.

Ok I admit this is huge and may be you can do this through some alliance and not an actual conference. But the TV product this could produce is unbelievable. Obviously a lot of numbers would have to be crunched but can't see with these brands, conference playoff, etc how this not be huge dollars.

In this day and age, have to think big, big. I mean is it much different than SEC speculation about going to 20 teams?

Not sure if you still get ND under this layout but it is an awesome plan and takes it hard to the SEC and BIG10

Yes. I know ND may not be all in and I still wonder what per team pay out would be, as still a little lacking in football marquee teams and as we know football is 80%. But content matters too and this be a lot of ACC network content across all sports. May have several networks for all the content

And if it only serves to get us a better TV contract for a few years and out from GOR so be it …. It may have served its purpose.

Jul 5, 2022, 11:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Go big ]

Cincinnati would almost have to be the ND replacement here. It's in B1G territory, Ohio, and continuous to the rest of the Atlantic side footprint.

ND is not joining a conference until they are shut out of scheduling and post-season opportunities, and that is a ways off.

The only way I see the ROYs making up financial ground is skewing the competition and payouts to those programs more committed to football and getting more of those games between them on TV more often. Doing away with divisions was an okay way to help that along for the ACC - wish we had done that sooner. But with the ROYs, for football scheduling and weekly bigger game / bigger draw programming, they would need the bigger football schools to play each other more often, and the others doing the same. Enough crossover to matter and satisfy locals and rivalries, but producing 3-4 juicy games every Saturday instead of the maybe 1, sometimes 2 is the only way I see of moving the financial needle.

Yes even with all these teams still a lot of dead weight. But as we all been hoping for it VT, GT, Miami etc get back to being good to really good product grows. Add some really good rivalry games. BYU/ Utah; Pitt -WVA etc

Would think could use coast to coast exposure as selling point for NIL. “We cam market you coast to coast. ….. you will be known from California to SC”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Go bigger then?

Jul 6, 2022, 10:11 AM

To alleviate the dead weight you could go the route of promotion / relegation on each side. And while we're adding Cincinnati, might as well tack on the other larger left out FBS in the mix. If good is playing good, it would still produce compelling content with the extras.

Atlantic Premier
Clemson
Miami
Va Tech
FSU
UNC
WVa
NC State
Pitt
Louisville
Cincinnati

Atlantic Champions
Ga Tech
Duke
Wake
BC
Syracuse
UVA
Memphis
UCF
Navy
USF

Pacific Premier
Baylor
OK State
Oregon
Washington
Stanford
AZ State
Utah
BYU
Iowa State
TCU

Pacific Champions
Boise State
Colorado
Texas Tech
K State
Oregon State
Washington State
Arizona
California
Kansas
Houston

Schedule 6 games within each division, 3 games cross division, and 1 game cross-league (matched with division strength). This would produce 35 marquee games per league per season. You could tweak the numbers to 7/2/1 if it makes more financial and competitive sense, but I would think 6/3/1 would do the trick and help keep geography and old rivalries still intact.

Programs in the Premier League earn more media rights revenue than those in the Champions League due to the enhanced competition and being the league's media breadwinners.

Promote/Relegate every 2 years based on either 4 or 6-year running conference records, and limit the numbers to maybe 2 per cycle.

If the SEC and B1G are looking at adding 4 teams each to a post-season, the Atlantic and Pacific would produce at least 2 - the Premier league regular season champ plus the next best regardless of division. If the number is 12 then that fills it. If the number is 16 then there's 4 at-large spots left between all leagues to fill.

Top competitors play more often. The dead weight plays among itself more often. Scheduling could prioritize rivals and geography as needed, but also tweaked for national interest. Schedules would be set for two years then completely rebuilt for the following two after promotion/relegation. And on and on.

Re: Go bigger then?

Jul 6, 2022, 10:32 AM

This is along lines of WSJ article this past weekend using English Premier League as the example.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As a further caveat for both TV and top programs in each

Jul 6, 2022, 11:55 AM

league, of the 3 games versus the lower division, 2 could be home games for the Premier division teams. This would serve as further reward for the top programs, it would help maintain 7 game home schedules including a quality OOC game for those programs, and the optics from a media standpoint are going to be better because of the venues and fan bases present.

This doesn't get us to 100% I don't believe, but it gets us to 75-80% IMO, we control our own destiny, our OOC scheduling options remain open, and it's geographically sound and competitive for all sports.

Re: Go big

Jul 6, 2022, 6:49 AM

Way too much dead weight in there. The TV contract would be big but by the time it’s split up between all those teams I bet you’re looking at something way below $100 m per team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And therein lies the problem. I would even suggest that its

Jul 6, 2022, 7:00 AM

MOSTLY deadweight. So tell me, how is that going to compete with the SEC or BIG? Just because you have 1411 teams in a conference doesnt mean its going to be competitive. The idea that any conference comprised of the ACC and leftovers no one wanted from the B12 and Pac is financially or competitively comparable is laughable. The ACC has done nothing but screw Clemson for the last 40 years. I, for one, cant wait to be out.

Re: And therein lies the problem. I would even suggest that its

Jul 6, 2022, 9:04 AM

you may be right. It will just be what the TV execs say after they crunch the numbers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I appreciate your effort, but I don't think it's the answer.

Jul 6, 2022, 11:26 AM

Again, it's all about compelling matchups that captures TV eyeballs nationwide. You can do a lot of combinations... but Texas Tech vs Boston College, Arizona vs Pitt, etc, etc... will NOT be able to compete with the BIG or SEC Game of the Week. They got Bama vs LSU, Texas vs Texas A&M, Okla vs Georgia, Ohio St vs Sou Cal, whatever. We got VPI vs Oregon St. Which game would you watch?

I see no combination of "leftovers" that could even come close to getting the TV dollars that the BIG & SEC will command.

Does this division move the needle for you?

Jul 6, 2022, 12:10 PM

Clemson
Miami
Va Tech
FSU
UNC
WVa
NC State
Pitt
Louisville
Cincinnati

The rest of the ACC plus some up-and-comers would be in a separate division. Do the same with the west.

Baylor
OK State
Oregon
Washington
Stanford
AZ State
Utah
BYU
Iowa State
TCU
