A Simple Summation of Defense From a Non-Grognard

Sep 25, 2022, 8:39 AM

1) Wake Max Protected a good bit of the game and their mesh RBs missed few blitzes. That left our 4-6 rushers against 7-8 blockers. We have a great front 4 but it's hard to beat almost everyone double teamed.

2) Hartman, though throwing to a pattern set of 2-3 worked the sidelines where our Freshmen corners were, until late 3rd Qtr mostly on an island for long periods of time. You extend a pass play into the 4+ second range and you get what we saw yesterday, lots of catches and penalties.

BV would have diagnosed this in 2 series and FORCED Wake to run. This game would have been a Clemson win by 3 scores if Wes had gone to 2 Deep or another pass safe defense earlier. Wake out coached us in this game. Caveat to this is, had Clemson secondary been uninjured 1/2 to 1/3 of Hartman's completions and/or PIs would have never occured.

Glad Tigers adjusted late, I expect a healthier team at home against a more traditional offense to do just fine. If DJ plays well, NCSU is a win.

Agree with most of this….not sure about the BV

Part, because he would HATE giving up that much run yardage. I thought we could have benefitted from a different DL formation to minimize the effect that f the double team. Play a man (davis/bresee/page) over the center with the instruction to gain ground. Tougher to double team when the NG is straight over (zero technique).
Just glad we won!

Hadn't Thought of the Old Malachi Crunch on the NG

Sep 25, 2022, 8:58 AM

That would have worked well as their RB never left the A/B gap

Finally, some real FB discussion. It's a tad concerning that it's been something different on D each of the 4 games.

Wake only had 125 yards in first half. The penalties killed us. Wake adjusted in 3rd quarter and we adjusted in 4th. CBs played bad. That not all on Wes. We won. We’re 4-0. Everybody should be happy.

I am Thrilled...Our Defense is Solid and Should be Very

Healthy to buttslam Devin O'Queery. Glad to see O improve each week. Punting still scares me but it can't get much worse.

not so fast… if we had gone 2 deep earlier

Tnet would be complaining about why didn’t we stop the run instead of complaining about our DBs

Wes played the slow mesh the exact same way BV has in the past—- tight man, don’t let you run, and dare you to make enough plays downfield to beat us.

1. We were injury riddled in the secondary

2. WF’s oline did as good of a job as I’ve seen against our front—- no pressure

3. Hartman flat out made the plays that we dare teams to make. Period.

Wes Schematically Was On Target If He Had Even Sophomores

in Secondary. This was a confluence of a very odd gimmickly offense perfectly matched to Clemson injuries

yes… even during BVs tenure we would sometimes give up big pass plays…

Sep 25, 2022, 9:11 AM

b/c he was going to play man, walk out safeties down, and say “ you can’t make enough plays against press man and pressure to beat us”

That is how we have always played the slow mesh. You play it similar to how you played PJs option.

Hartman made those throw
